Default Numbering for VIR Speedtrial event

This was mentioned in another thread, just wanted to see if we could get clarification...is there numbering by group skill? And will relatively large magnets hang on at track speeds? I'd imagine they would, but i haven't had my magnets above 80ish. Thanks!

0-99 for staff/workers,
100-199 for Beginners,
200-299 for Intermediates,
300-399 for Advanced drivers,
400-499 for Instructors

Relatively large magnets should hang on, but that is based on surface area and thickness. I know of people who have lost 8-10" tall, thick autoX magnets at 120+ mph on the straights at VIR, but others say they do just fine. Best way to fixit is to put some scotch-tape on the frontmost edges...

Hope that helps,

Aleph, just an FYI, I had my number magnets (about 12"x12") on at Nelson Ledges the few times I went. They stayed on just fine. I wouldnt count on small magnets staying put though.

A flying magnetic number at 120MPH could be quite dangerous. Some tracks and sanctioning bodies prohibit them for this reason.

If your car is anything close to white - this will work for you.. Wax the area pretty good, and then draw on your car with a dry-erase marker.. I do it all the time on my car (not just for track numbers) and it usually comes right off. If it gets stubbern, just put some elbow grease into it..

I don't know if the dry erase could ever stain the finish. I'm not sure I would want to risk that. I do know that I've used duck tape and electrical tape over a waxed/polished area and only had to use a little Citrus type cleaner to get off the most stubborn glue. It didn't hurt the finish at all.

I use circle magnets (10" x 10") and they have never budged even in a downpour at VIR - then again the car only hits 124mph sooooo, what do I know. The number magnets are the ones I always see flying off of Shultz' car so I'd say they are suspect

Also, shoe polish ain't the most desirable medium in the rain IMHO.

Jason (Darth Vade R) had some nice numbers that stayed on perfectly well on both straights at VIR...which means about 130 since he was in an ITR.
I should clarify. Actually, I decided to go with stick on instead after speaking with Jon about the matter. As far as appearance goes, here's a pic of my R with the numbers.

The magnets look IDENTICAL to the stick on, and appear to be very high quality. David (FAST4DR on the board) is purchasing a set of magnets from me that I had planned on using before deciding on the stick on. He'll be running them at the Speedtrial event should you like to take a closer look...

Jason- who hopes this helps

Not to be an ***, but those are the type of magnetic numbers I see spiraling toward earth entering T1 at VIR and CMP. I would suggest to the purchaser to tape down the leading edge.

Why would you call yourself an *** for stating that precaution? That's good advice...

Jason- who, IF HE HAD MAGNETS, would tape the corners...

What is the cost of a set of stick on numbers like Jason's? What about the magnetic ones? Are the stick ons removable/reusable?

Also, how do you know you've got a unique number for an event, or do they even care about dups?

I hope this is a slight exaggeration? I think Warren can [i]maybe[i/] hit 130 in his R at VIR?

Just thought I'd err on the side of caution - been kinda contentious around these parts as of late

You can always pick something rather unique and you should keep it. For NASA, you can check/confirm with Elyse (LeesZ ?). With Speedtrial, it shouldn't matter as they put on your numbers in a cold dank parking lot - make sure Morgan does it- others tend to leave drips and runs (no names of-course) - maybe that's because I tagged a Tahoe while lining up for tech though . You can also get an extra "1" or something to make a "4" into a "14" if needed. And yes, they do care about dups - its how the corner workers communicate information about you on track.

thanks Adam
usually the only non-seqeuntial numbers we allowed at Speedtrial are permanent numbers on the side of built race cars that do not have a clearly visible window surface to write numbers on
after listening in on several sessions of VIR over the track worker radio, the corner workers will use everything possible to describe the car they want for you to look at or warn you about, numbers help distinguish even more but are also used, in Speedtrials case, for class recognition and logging information

I dunno Dave, Warren was pretty far into 5th when I was riding with him . And if your shoe polish numbers start to fade, people like me come along and refresh em on the grid for ya, its like a full service car wash, except you have to clean the polish off, not us

The main thing that screws with white shoe polish's ability to stick to windows is, believe it or not, Rain-X.

On non-Rain-X'd windows, once white shoe polish dries thoroughly (and assuming it is applied in the dry)... it will stay on for literally *months*.

On Rain-X'd windows, it will never go on correctly because it keeps beading up, and it won't stick nearly as well in any kind of condition.

Long story short? Print numbers on a sheet of paper and tape them to the side of the car instead.

I think i'll rely on the shoe polish method, I don't really have an easy way of creating numbers in the 2XX range with my magnets, and loosing them at speed would suck in a variety of ways anyway Thanks for all the answers!
