assuming you are taking the spring and shock appart, compress the spring enough that the spring will move up and down. then loosen the top nut. this way the shock top wont come blowing off at you with the spring behind it. will it be easier? maybe, maybe not.

If you DO NOT need the shock again then just put some locking pliars onto the shaft and squeeze the **** out of it until you can turn the nut.

If you DO need the shock again then get some liquid wrench on it, wait 15 minutes and then take an impact wrench to it. Make sure you have a buddy hold the other end of the shock housing tightly. Note: DO NOT use the impact wrench to put the nut back on!

yeah it'll work, but just be careful and if that nut's stuck on you may not be able to hold onto the screwdriver.

Partially, the shaft will always rotate on its own whether on the car or not, but on the car it's at least stable. Just remember that if you do loosen it on the car JUST break the nut loose, don't unscrew it or you could do some real damage.

I've taken nuts off by having some of my buddies actually grab the shock shaft and hang on while I got it loose.
