Soon To Be Accord Owner
I am selling my car and I am thinking about getting an Accord. I was looking at the 5/6th gen's. While I am out looking at them them, what do you guys think I should look for (common mechanical/cosmetic flaws, little problems that will turn into big problems, etc.). Also, What are the differences in preformance ratings, I know HP/TQ #'s, I am talking about handling, brakes, suspension, acceleration, between the LX, EX, and V6 models. One last question, what do you think would be a fair price for a 5/6th gen in good mechanical shape(completely stock), good paint, good interior, and decent miles(not too high, but doesnt have to be super low). Thanks, any other input would be greatly appriciated, Thanks again
I'd advise you to look for a 5th gen EX 4cyl... the v6 is no good.
EX has rear disks, anti-lock, sunroof, power drivers seat, optional leather seats, alloys...most 5th gen accords have power windows/lock I believe (my old lx had it)
Get a coupe, I think they handle a little better and look nicer IMO.
When I bought my car there were a few small dings/scratches... I didnt care about them at the time, but now I cannot stand them. So try to find one with the least scratched (of course) and run a carfax on the car.
Are you planning on swapping the engine?

I was thinking about getting a 2-door with an automatic. I have had sticks on all of my cars so far and I just want to relax while I drive now. IMO I also prefer the two door. What do you think a good 5th gen 4cyl automatic with two-doors would run me?
I've seen them go for up to 7000... depends on condition.
If you're looking for an auto go for a 6th gen v6... the 5th gen auto's arent worth it.

Well I paid $4300 for my 96 EX 2 door 5 speed with 129K miles (timing belt and all tires replaced recently tho) so I consider that a good deal for a car that blue books at $4500-5000. About 5th gen vs. 6th gen, it's really a matter of budget and personal preference about looks.
My mom has a 99 EX sedan 4 cyl automatic and we haven't had any problems with it tho (about 47K miles), you hear all the time about 6th gen auto tranny problems. Guess she got lucky
My 5th gen is a bit smaller and sits lower. Any other comparisons about them feel free to ask and i'll do my best to describe it.
From what I've read about Honda V6's in the accords, they just do it to compete with cars like the Nissan Maxima and Toyota Camry, Hondas best engines are the 4 cyls.
So I'd go with a 5th gen 4 cyl EX if I were you, just because they look better (in my opinion), and the 5th gen auto trannys aren't as problematic as the 6th gen. Plus my 5th gen handles much better then her 6th gen (now that might be partially because mine is a coupe and hers is a sedan). Well good luck with the decision and feel free to ask any more questions!

I have a v6 auto its has 90K and when I bought it she had 73K no problems a few Small things nothing big. The tranny works fine I change the fluid every 15K I don't know what to tell you to do its possible a four cylinder auto (6'th gen) will run forever Its a gamble.
I know when I want something and people tell me it sucks I get pissed off so everything about the car I LOVE it's quite, digital climate control..... The only thing is I am worried when my car hits 100K and Its no longer covered I will have to put a couple grand into a new tranny So I think it might be worth it for my to buy a Scion TC. I drive big manual trucks at work all day its nice to get into my auto and relax but hey its your call good luck man.

I don't like automatic transmission vehicles, but of the couple automatics I've owned the one on the 5th gen accord I own right now is the best. It's responsive, and doesn't do that searching for the right gear that some autos do when going up and down hills and speeding up/slowing down quickly.
As for a good webpage with a detailed review of the 5th gen accord, click here:

too bad you're in cali, or you could take a look at my accord for sale (see sig), but I'm sure you will find a good one in the $3500 to $4500 range around where you live......Honda sold tons of them.

Is everyone missing the 6th gen threads for some reason?
6th gen Auto trannies are JUNK!
With the 7 yr/100k warranties on them, about to run out, it would be like shooting yourself int he foot to go buy one.
Look for a good used 5th gen if you want an auto accord, I have a 6th and I wish I never saw the thing...

I have both a 5th and 6th gen so speaking from experience I would suggest drive both and decide which one you like better.
5th Gen Known problems are- ABS leak (major pain in the ***), A/C Freon leak, drivers door panel creak/break from becoming brittle over time, Loud engine valves, short master cylinder life span, and gets easily warped rotors. This of course are things that I have encountered with my 96 (except the door panel) and found a lot of other 5th gen owners complain of also.
As for 6th gens I have only had our 2000 for about a year, so far I have noticed oxidation (green color) and thats pretty much it. Our 2000 has 89000 miles on it and has not had any kind of problem with the transmission at all. So obviously all 6th gens dont have this problem. Some day maybe but not yet. Also I am not impressed with the power of a 6th gen V6 at all. They are kind of overated if you ask me.
Dont let the "problem" list of the 5th gen scare you away, I love my 96 it has been an awesome car, it has 150000 now and I still take it out of town without even thinking twice about it. One of the coolest things about hondas (if you didnt already know) is that they are so easy to work on. I mean extremely easy!

Mine has none of those things, cool
or maybe they were taken care of by the previous owner(s)
too bad I have my heart set on selling it......but what you say is true....I've put 3000 miles on the car over the last few months without one hiccup

hey, i have an automatic 95 accord ex. I'd much rather have stick, but it was a gift (lucky me). Anyway, my car rides dope. I had a 94 lx sedan before, and my ex is way faster. It could definitely use some help when it comes to handling, but it's not that bad. Personally, i like the 94-97s. I've had some good runs with mine, and it's not too hard to get them pretty quick, even autos. Anway, like somebody else already said, just test-drive and see what you like, after all, you'll be the one behind the wheel. Good luck
I've got a 2000 Accord 4dr EX 4-cyl auto w/ 76,000 miles.
I haven't had any problems with my transmission although during the second to third years at I'd estimated about 30,000 miles, I felt the tranny hunt around sometimes and not downshift as it should during braking. I had the transmission fluid flushed and since then no problems. I've changed the fluids once since then and still no problems.
Who knows, maybe the moment after it hits 100k miles it'll break down on me.
