Default Good welder to start with?

OK...I am looking to start my fabricating skills and hopefully learn a new trade.
What is a good welder type to start learning! Is it posiible to learn by teaching yourself?

Thanks in advance!

I taught myself.. so i would say yes it is possible to teach yourself.

I started out welding with a Lincoln Pro-MIG 135

Something small like that is good to get an idea of how to weld good. I now own a Miller MIG 185 and i love it! Its well worth the investment which ran me about $700

Do you feel its better to start with a smaller/economical set-up first? Or just buy what i feel i can afford and start there? I dont want to jump into a lake, if i cant swim yet

Sorry for the dumb questions.

Buy what you can afford.

Training wheels do very little to help you learn to ride a bike.

I have a Clarke Welder that I got from weldingdepot.com

I have to say I think I got a much better welder than the Lincoln for the price!

Thus far nothing bad to say! never even a bad weld!

I started off with a lincoln sp125 and pretty much tought myself, if you have a friend or someone who knows how to weld and what the weld should look like they can help you. Very easy goal to accomplish, I took the class in high school for a year and a half and learned just about every process, took 4th in a regional welding comp and moved on to the state comp. in washington. the only advice I can give you is no matter what don't put it down it's a great trade and you can do alot of you own work at home or make a few bucks on the side doing exhaust jobs, or what ever some one may pay you to do.
