I'm really trying to learn about welding, never done it before. One of my friends has a wire-feed type welder. I've read that there's 2 types of wire feed, gas and non-gas.
I'm looking for minor welding of exhaust tubes and manifolds. I'm not going to fabricate a manifold, just patch one up that has TINY holes here and there.
I would like to know if it's feasable with a feed-type welder to piece piping together and patch small holes on a manifold.
Also, which is the easiest wire to use when a n00b is trying it for the first time?
Thanks.

Well I am not much of a welder but I used flux core to start with/ learn with. When I swithced over to gas it was a night and day difference for me at how much easier it became with gas (still have a ton to learn though). For a small projects if you go flux you dont have to go buy or rent a bottle or fill it up, if you arent going to weld often can kind of be a waste of money, having a bottle and gas sitting around that you dont use.
This is coming from a self-taught newbs perspective though, hehe

Personally I wouldn't use the flux, unless youre welding something like a manifold because a manifold is thick and is going to take alot more heat to melt, and flux core is a hot process. i would use .035 wire on the regular exhaust pipe because really thats all you need and it'll look alot nicer, where if you were to use the flux core on the exhaust pipe youre more likely to burn a huge hole in the piping since you're a newby to welding.
