Default Stock BOSE Sound System Modification/Replacement?

I have heard that you cannot modify single components of the stock BOSE sound system in the type-s model (only speakers, or just a new head unit, etc.). Is this true??
Just lookin for a better head unit but if I have to replace everything just to get a new head unit, I am gonna wait cuz the system is not bad at all for stock.
The claim is that BOSE has the system wired so if one component is modified or replaced then the entire system will fail. I dont know if this is true, so any thoughts or information - holla back.
