OK so I change to oil for the first time. 97 honda accord with 114,000 miles. Oil plug end is coated with a shiney black coating that looks like epoxy paint. Is this standard for an accord? Why do they do this? Do I have sludge? I have changed oil on many cars and this is the first I have found to have any coating.

It is very hard thick paint usually very shiney. Maybe the oil sump is coated in Hondas?

 

Another owner on Bobistheoilguy site reports this is not normal. I am thinking this is sludge. Anyone seen a coating of sludge on the oil plug before.

 

Sludge is soft, like mud or wet clay. Not hard like epoxy paint. Does it rub off onto your fingers?

 

It looks like it is paint. Two other owners have said that it is normal. Honda coats the oil pan inside and out. Now I have three owners saying this is normal. You could not rub this stuff off with anything but heavy sand paper. Thanks for the responses.
