Default All of a sudden, Its MUCH harder (more stiff) to change into gears (help)

Its my daily eg hatch. about 130,000km's on it. The car is well maintained.

Anyways it has always been so easy and simple to put it into any gear and go, but today for some reason it just got STIFF. It still goes into any gear and what not (no grinding) but its just REALLY stiff. I never grind gears so its not the syncros and Im not really sure.

The weather has been mmore then -40 here and it was fine and today we got like a mini heat wave , its 0 out and this is happeneing.

I just went out and finally got off that fkin fill bolt on the tranny and by sticking my pinky in and downwards there is tranny fluid in there, not sure if here should be more or what not, Stupid honda not having a level for a dipstick in the tranny.

I have gotten under the car and it all seems normal so I really have no idea. :S

What do you guys think it could be?

Oh the clutch feels absolutly normal, no change in the feel of it at all and the clutch

thanks guys :S

Is it any easier to shift gears when the car is off?

It sounds like the clutch is not fully disengaging. How many miles on the clutch?

what fluid are you using, like if you use gear fluid, it is too thick when it is cold and will not allow a shift. maybe change itout with some honda MTF and go from there.

on and or off, The car feels the excact same to shift.

I honestly dont know how many miles on teh clucth as it has always been perfect. I mean with my stock daily driver I can squeel second still anytime and I know what a cluch acts like when its going, No signs of the car reving up and not going anywhere :S

Running honda fluid.

thanks more

Again its not HARD to get into any gear, Its just REALLY FKIN STIFF when I move the shifter from gear to gear. I have to use my entire hand vs 1 or 2 fingers if i wanted?

check your shift linkage. sounds like you may have a possible bind somewhere. if not, it is in your trans... most likely it is the linkage though.

^^yep what he said^^

I was going to ask you to check and see if you had any snow or ice jammed up underneath the car around the shift linkage or if there was any damage from some in that area.

so you didn't drive up over a hard snowbank or anything?

I've experienced a similar problem when the bolts at the bottom of the shifter were to tight but I'm not sure how that could have happened unless you ran it up over something accidentally. Try loosening them and see if that makes a difference.

i bet for some odd reason its the bolt for the bottom of the shifter...

When I got my ITR shifter from acura, stupid me was like "let me tighten this like crazy" because my stock dx shifter had too much side-to-side play, and then when I went to put it in gear the damn thing wouldnt budge up or down! Got under the car and loosened it a bit and its been perfect ever since

Moral of the story...there is none....hmm

hum, side to side, well its stiff but not anymore so then normal id say. Its the forward and backwards that is REALLY STIFF.

I never tightened the bottom bolts so they should be the same as they have been for the past year but I will have a peek when Im able to actually get under it.

I mean i can YANK HARD UP AND OR PUSH DOWN LIKE MAD when i shift and its still the same (STIFF) like a **** :S

Well I mean all Im thinking it can be now is either the bushing by the actuall shifter or the one up front so I have to get under and take the linkage apart.

Suvcks that its winter here, freezing cold and wet everywhere and its work I can do on my own. Ill try to find somewhere indoors and war to do it up, jeep suggestions comming S:

if it is stiff only for/aft, then you may have to grease your ball (...lol, i just figured out what i wrote) on the shifter, or look into the bolt.bushing underneath. my guess would be the bolt/bushing, as side to side movement would be stiff if the ball/socket was corroded.

I greesed the **** outta the ball, very first thing I did when I took off the inside portion of the center consol. It just looked dry but it didnt make a diff or help

I will wait till i get a chance to get under and take off the 2 bolts and look at the bushing.

It could have been caused from the freeze we had then warmth. It could have been frozed almost then after my first few shifts just did it in.

what grease did you use? a dab of silicone grease will work best, whereas automotive bearing type grease will cause a bit of binding

When my clutch pressure plate went out and the springs from it got lodged inbetween the plate and clutch it started getting very hard to shift....I would think a spring is loose or lodged or fallen out or something along those lines.

my clutch did that too. after i fixed the tranny side mount that broke off!!luckly the only ill effect was the clutch shifting very hard. it never grind any gears, just tuff to shift, so i changed the cluchanyway.(granted i already had the new cluch cause the stock was on its way out.)
