Default Need help w/brake set up, what MC and BB to use?

Ok, so it's finally time to upgrade the brakes on the daily driver. I got a 97 Civic dx (which is NON ABS), I got front and rear 99-00 Civic Si brake set ups, and Goodridge steel braided brake lines. The thing I want to know is which MC and BB could I use being that my Civic is NON ABS. What have you guys with NON ABS 96-00 Civics used? Do you just use the 99-00 MC and BB and bend the lines?

Thanks for your help.

I'd also get a new prop valve, since the one you have is for a rear disk.

Are the brake lines to the MC that different for a 96-98 than a 99-00 civic? I know my EX has the same MC and brake booster that a 99-00 Si has. Guess its easier to just leave the whole system the same and just put in rear drums and a different prop valve.

Hmm, I was told that I didn't need a prop valve since all the 96-00 Civics use the same one, same part #, is that true? Sorry for sounding like a noob, but I am more of a DC/EG/EF guy. So then if I use the EX or Si MC and BB (which is for an ABS equipped car) what exactly do I have to do to make it fit and work right in my non ABS equipped civic?

USDM civic EX's and Si's don't have ABS. My EX doesn't and there's a Si here too and it doesn't have ABS.

nevermind, you are looking for the integra one, huh. I wouldn't know, but I wouldn't think you'd need any larger than what the 99-00 civic's have.

That's funny, when I looked up prop valves, my EX had a different part number than a 99-00 Si.

is the proportioning valve seperate on civic braking systems, or included in the MC. I want to go to rear discs, but i am curious if i would also need MC or if i could just do the proportioning valve.

The prop valve is bolted to the firewall and a seperate part from the master cylinder.

ahhh... so with a rear disc swap i should get a prop valve from a civic SI on integra with discs and run the same master cylinder?

Hey, we all gotta learn sometime!

I think the only part that doesn't botl up would be a new prop valve. I have a friend with a 99 civic and he converted to rear disk and didn't change the prop valve in his car and hasn't had a problem. Then there is me, and I have improved the rear bias, but the rear still locks up first.

If you want to upgrade your MC i would suggest looking into the 88-90 EX MC. There 15/16th i think, not sure. I remember Tom (B18C-EH2) did a great write up on it a while back.

Heres my question for you though, when you did your rear disc you didnt change the prop valve or the MC/BB? Because im going to do a rear swap for a friend but he doesnt want to do it yet because he doesnt have the MC/BB and Prop Valve.

96-00 EX's had ABS as an option. afaik, 96-00 hatches have the same prop valve as Si's. the 91 civic EX 4dr has a 15/16" MC, but i'm not sure if it'll bolt on to a 97 booster. they changed the bolt pattern sometime for the EK's. if the bolt pattern is the same as EG cars, then it'll bolt on. if it isnt, i believe you can bolt on the 99+ Si master cylinder to your stock booster.

Somewhat similar question: On an EG, when you convert to disc, do you have to upgrade MC/BB and prop valve right away, or can you run it without upgrading those parts for a while (month or so)?

On my 2000 civic ex, it has the same MC and BB as the 99-00 Si. The only difference is the prop valve and rear drum. My rear disk conversion was with a BAER big brake kit and at first I didn't change the prop valve. OMG...talk about rear bias! the rears are easy to lock!

MY buddy, who has a 99 civic ex just converted to 99-00 Si rear disk and left the stock prop valve and hasn't had any problems.

the EG Si, which had 4wheels discs, ran the same 13/16 MC as the rest of the hatches. you could run with the stock prop valve, but the rears wouldn't be helping to their full potential. disc brakes need more pressure than drums, and the disc brake prop valve will allow more pressure on the rears

Ok, so just swapping the prop valve to teg spec at the time of rear disc conversion would help alot? Do you have to reflare lines or is it a direct bolt in?

i've heard of people not swapping it out and they didnt notice any problems. i just wanted to do it "right" and swap it out.

i used a prop valve from a non-abs teg (4030). i'm pretty sure the 4040 prop valve from abs tegs bolts in also

**For 92-95 civics**
1. If you swap rear discs in, you should get a 40/40 prop. valve
2. If get bigger front discs, you should get the 91 civic ex 4 door MC (15/16ths)

**For 96-00 civics**
1. If you swap in rear discs, you should double check your prop valve. Some rear drum models came w/ 40/40.
2. If you get bigger front discs, you should get a bigger master cylinder. I don't know which one bolts on, but I'll bet a NON ABS Si MC will work perfect.

As for the debate about the NEED for a 40/40 vlave, I've been doing some thinking. I'll bet theat the drum version (30/30) reduces line pressure in the rears a little more under HARD braking than the disc valve (40/40). This means your rear discs will work fine with a 30/30, but they won't be doing quite as much work as they are able to.

Since my rear disc conversion (with 40/40 valve), I have noticed a more braking being done in the rear under heavy braking. I could also be the Axxis Ultimates in the rear too.

**edit** ABS cars don't have a Proportioning valve that can be used on NON ABS cars.

I'm gonna take a stab at it and say you do need to replace the prop valve from an Si, as far as the brake lines I would say you'd be best with 99-00 Si brake lines.

30/40 pp is also a 4 disks setup.
if no bb and mc change = soft, spongy pedal feel.
