my brother bought a welder and when he was at work i played with it, then i went to a welding school that only taught me stick because i only went for a semester. SO basically with mig i taught myself. Ive never tigged.

high school stick welding. Then picked up a mig. Only do it like 4-5 times a year. So yea, I still suck. I am better at stick welding than mig.

i was stuck in a situation where i needed to finish a car...and our old welder was on vacation. the car HAD to be done...so i picked up a few peices of scrap metal...and started tigging. the car got done...and since then ive built entire turbo kits. its fun....my favorite part is that no matter how good you get (im far from that point yet) but there is ALWAYS room for improvement.

Self taught. the internet is a wonderful resource of information. I read anything and everything about tig welding , then i bought one , and gained hands on experience.

I took welding for 1.5yrs in high school, where we did oxy-acetylene, mig, and about 90% of it was stick. I then went to a vocational pipe welding school. Five months there, and I was out working my first job as a journeyman pipewelder.

Self-teaching is ok for hobby stuff, especially when you consider the help and advice you can get from others, even online. However, if you want to weld for a living, or make it part of your job...or if you are wanting to be really good, I'd suggest starting with an evenig class at a local school. Then, after verifying that you like it, and getting started, look into more classes or a vocational school.

Basically, if you wanna be really good or weld for a living, go to school...and find a good one, not one where the teacher can tell you how, but can't show you.

I taught myself MIG, then I took TIG at a tech. school. But in order to take TIG, you had to either have completed, or be enrolled in MIG. SO..........I was pissed, because I knew how to MIG already, but I will tell you, I learned a ton more about MIG, and my MIG skills got alot better.
So I agree with Engloid, a good school can teach you alot more then you think, even if you already weld.

self taught TIG welding aluminum. I've spent more time in the hospital than I've spent MIG welding :-P Never done oxy/acetylene or stick. I know...I'll get around to it soon.
