Engine Install Prices
I have an H22 in my 95 Accord. The H22 quit on me not too long ago. I want to stick a new JDM H22 in it. How much should I be looking at for labor to install it? Does anyone know of any reliable, cheap places around So Cal where I can have the work done?
Prices vary considerably so shop around. you can search the internet for prices and then you can guess at the labor.
I recently replaced my H22A1 with an H22A directly from Japan. The only bit of advice I can give here is make sure you get everything in writing and don't pay the bill until you are satisfied.
The mechanic I hired said he had changed lots of Accord motors and I believed him. What a sucker I was.
The list of problems I had were numerous after I received the car. They are as follows;
1/ Broken motor mounts, broken/chipped main pulleys,
2/ Battery bracket missing- battery bouncing around,
3/ Engine faults lights that cannot be reset because the drivers in my PCM were damaged- likely from a battery being connected backwards,
4/ Motor mounts bolts falling out because locktite was not used - this in turn created constant exhaust problems where I had to replace the braided exhaust section,
5/ Mounting brackets for japanese components are slightly different but the mechanic didn't realize this. My alternator and power steering pumps were too high in the engine compartment so the power steering pump pulley hit the hood when I closed it. I changed out the old brackets from my old motor in my driveway and fixed the problem,
6/ My cruise control does not work. This is simply because the mechanic didn't realize that they don't use cruise in Japan or he was too lazy to modify the throttle control. Take your pick.
7/ Hoses were routed badly around the engine. Had to rework so they looked like the pictures in my manual,
8/ Hydraulic clutch lines routed very badly. I could feel something was wrong the first time I pushed in the clutch pedal. It wasn't very smooth. I told this to the mechanic but he said I needed a new clutch. You should have seen the look on his face when I told him the clutch had been replaced only 2000km earlier. I found the hose to be pinched around a water hose clamp. I had to remove the slave solenoid to reroute the hose.
The biggest problem I had was the fact that the motor came "loose" on a skid. I suspect that most of the damage to pulleys was caused by the engine rolling around. Do not accept a motor that is shipped loose on a skid. If you can, inspect the motor for any external damage before it is installed. Take pictures of the motor before the install so that you can back up any warranty issues later.
And don't believe the mechanic when he says he needs to replace sensors on your new motor. The sensor damage probably came from him rolling the motor around.
Reuse the sensors from your old motor so they can't get you for the extras.

I'm also faced with having to do an engine swap and I was quoted in the late 600's
I believe this figure was from 11-12hr X almost $59 hr
I'm not sure if this is a fair price or not
???

I guess hourly charge depends on who does it but did they say it would take approx 12 hrs? I'm not sure where he got the number but I believe the computer gave that figure. Maybe he got it from a book or something. How many hrs did they quote you for?

lol, I would love to do it with help. But I don't know sh*t and the one person I would ask to help, well, I don't think he's that good at all himself. I need this car fixed asap and I know this mechanic is good with Hondas. So I guess I gotta pay up...

My install cost me around $1800. I guess about half of that was labour. In the US$ I am guessing somewhere arond 1300$.
I would be suspicious of anyone who gave me to low a quote or wanted to the job by the hour.
$600 US seems about right for labour. The motor I am guessing should be about the same price. Get the quote in writing though.
I always feel sorry for my Southern neighbors. You guys always get hosed for luxury items.
A 20000$ car in the US will sell for the same price here in Canada in Canadian dollars! That's probably a difference of about 4000 US$ when you take the exchange rate into account.
I also compared stereo equpiment prices when I was in the States last. A 300$ US car stereo was selling in Canada for about 175$ CDN. And yes they were exactly the same stereos.
To add insult to injury you simply can't drive across the border and buy a car in Windsor. No you can't. Trade agreements say that you must pay duties on that new car or stereo you just bought in Canada. So in the end you might as well have bought that car or stereo in the US.

I was going to help but scammers should die. PLus if you already have an H22 in there then it is as easy as pulling the old one out and putting the new one in.
