Default 98 Civic EX- Broken Block from mount

Hey all,
I got this 98 civic ex a few months ago and a peice of the block where the mount goes broke off... Pissed me off, but ended up getting a new engine, the same stock d16y8. Same thing happened again.. any suggestions on how to fix this... withought buying a new engine that is. Heres a pic from the old engine, my mechanic tells me the same thing happened but this time the top part is broken.

Wow ! that really sucks.... I have no idea why they keep breaking.

You can weld aluminum...well maybe not you, but someone can. Im sure you can weld it back on and in most cases will be stonger.

Are there any other broken mounts? Do you jack the car up by the oil pan or something? Im impressed and a bit scared cause I have a 98 EX too.

Yea, my luck... no i'm not jacking it up from the oil pan, lol... I have a feeling it might be the other mounts, if one is worn or broken then it put pressure on this one then it broke... I checked them myself and they were fine, even the mechanic said so, so i just put the same ones it had. I was also told that since the engine is an aluminum alloy, that it couldn't be welded. Does anyone know?

sucks too cus i was about to buy some headers and exhaust for it lol. I'll probably end up selling the car...

i think something is causing the engine to torque one way too much. my thoughts would be to check the tranny, axles, around the housing area

If you weld it, the area around the welds will be weaker and it might just break again. It's better to find out what's really causing it to break and fix that.

Heli-coil is for repairing ruined threads, I dont believe it would help in this case.

well, what happend to my motor was that it pulled the studs right out of the block"that the drivers side mount attetches 2" you can find some one with a heliarc welder"aluminum welder" and tap it then make new threads.

I checked with a friend of mine that welds aluminum. he said it should def be weld-able. Just find someone with the right equipment.

I would double check all your mounts too, I would be something is wrong because its not like the EX is a torque monster. Something is wrong to be breaking stuff like that.

Was your car ever in an accident? The engine you replaced it with, was that in an accident? My local Honda salvage yard told me that the D series block don't handle accidents very well and commonly break in that very spot.

Thanks again for the info,

Well uppon checking more into the engine, we noticed that the thread was filled with silicon... and a closer look revealed that the engine was already welded there before! So apparently I was sold a crappy engine, I'm taking it back to the place where I got it the guy gave me some warranty time. Yes the car has been in an accident... actually like 2 years ago, but before all that ever happened it was working fine. Everyone I've talked to about this problem says that its a common problem on these engines, so I'm thinking about just dropping a different one in there... Gotta see whats available I defenitely don't want a y7... I want to keep my VTEC

Are you possibly missing one or both of your lower torque mounts or is the rubber inside the mount torn? Only way I can see that hapening.

I hope you get your money back, or at least a new engine. That's bullshit, people who scam others like that. The seller will try and tell you that he didn't know it was welded, but he probably had it fixed that way and sold it to you.
