Default OBD1 diagnostic tool?

I know this might be a stoopid/noobish question but I was wondering if there is any type of engine diagnostic tool for obd1 cars? I'm almost positive there is nothing like an obd2 scanner, but is there anything I can use to test the car while its running?

I get a cell every now and then when driving (usually when i drive hard, but not all the time), but whenever I turn the car off then back on to auxillary to check the code, the lights not on anymore. Its just really sporadic but I would like to know what is causing it.

BTW - i searched under recent and archived threads, finding nothing on this topic.

Yes there is!!! OBD I scanners don't have the capability of the OBD II scanners, but you can go on Ebay and pick up an older OTC scanner for less then $100. You plug in, and you can monitor what every sensor is reading while you're driving, pull the codes, monitor in real time what the computer is doing...

You will be surprised if you ever get a scanner just how useful it actually is!

Generally, (if you're not looking at a cheap one with LED's and beeps from autozone or something,) any scanner that is capable of scanning an obd II car, will be able to scan an obd I car. Aside from ebay... I have only one idea of where to look for an OTC scan tool, go to any small business auto shop in your area. Most places have updated to the newer generation scan tools and have the old ones just sitting around collecting dust. Some places may be willing to sell they're old scanner.

PS Always glad to help!

oh i had no idea that the obd2 scanners were capable of reading obd1. is there a special honda adapter i need to buy for the plug though bc when i look at the obd2 scanners the plugs for it are huge and the honda one is really small with those 2 prongs or whatever......but yeah ever since my car has been running its been great! i love it, its like a normal car now, only fast and sounds like a swarm of angry bees.

Chris, that two prong connector isn't the diagnostic connector port, it's just the service port to make the CEL flash the code that's stored. With my ODBII car, The diagnostic port is parallel to the driver's kick panal facing downwards. I'm not too sure where the port for OBD I Honda's are located, but I know you will definitly need to get all the adapter cables and cartriges that come with the scan tool.

Maybe if JDMlyfestyle reads this thread, he'll know the answer, he knows his stuff when it comes to anything related to the ECU.

oh ok for some reason i was under the impression that the car had to be in auxillary for you to check it. i guess ill just have to wait for it to come on again so i can check it

what i often do is jumper the plug and then go for a drive so as soon as the problem pops up the light starts flashing.

Hmm... I didn't know it worked that way either. That's good that you can do this.

here you go my friend.. read my thread and watch the video. it will show you everthing you need to know about your codes..

You do not have to shut the car off to check the code. But i always shut the car off and turn it back to aux cause electrical systems glitch sometimes and maybe the code will not store. so do that b4 hand cause it could have been a glitch. has happened to me b4.
