I know my speedo will be off a hair and I may rack up some more mileage, but are there any other drawbacks to going w/ a smaller than stock diameter?

 

I use 215-40-16 and I like smaller dia. with slight quicker accelerate feeling.
Speedo reads little faster but I don't mind and I ain't going for world top speed anyway.

 

You will have a smoother ride with 205/45's.

i think 205/40's might look funny on a teg, but look fine on a civic due to the civic's smaller wheel well.

 

less protection for your wheels when you hit huge potholes

That is likely the biggest drawback. I'd stay away from something smaller than 45 profile.

And curbing your wheels when you go to the carwash or kiss the curb a little when parking.
