Type R vs NSX autocross?
I know both of these cars are in different classess but I was just wondering if anyone knew the difference in handling between the TypeR and NSX. Anyone here ever drive both? How well does an NSX handle?
NSX is great, and i mean GREAT. but its underpowered. and slow.
However, while both cars are terrific handlers on a high-speed racetrack, neither car is all that great on a low-speed autocross course. The older NSX is particularly hampered by a wide gap between first and second gear; the upshift (at redline) takes place around 41 mph, right where you DON'T want it for autocross. There are gearing modifications that can avoid this, though (and the newer six-speed is just fine).
The BIG prob with the 3.0L 5sp NSX... was it's second gear is SOOOOOO tall... this REALLY hurts the car in an autocross. Several of the guys on the NSX board talk all the time about swapping in the 3.2L 6sp which helps desperately.

hell, i've beat an NSX at an autox, and it was my first year (his too though, but still...come to think of it, that was in my GS-R sedan). The car was fast, but wasn't quite nimble enough on the super tight course. It's moves were without reproach, however...that sucker did dance.

It doesn't seem like the extra power of the NSX would ever be used at an autocross. I drive a stock 2000 Civic Si and I've beaten Turbo Rx-7s and Supras. Although those cars are faster, an autocross doesn't give them a long enough straight-away to make up time. Of course it has a lot to do with the driver and design of the course. Now on an actual track, that's a different story.

More than a year ago I did an autox school. One of my students had an NSX. That car sticks like glue and the response is incredible especially through the slalom. The car also had some exhaust, which just sounded beautiful. Although during the timed event I ran a faster time in the type r than him (he was a novice), the NSX did certainly seem like the faster car.
Chris kids me because I've instructed him a couple of times now. Instructing someone is a no-lose proposition. If I kick his butt on the track, I can claim the credit. And if he kicks my butt on the track... I can still claim the credit!
