Riddle me this: SCC Ultimate Street Car Challenge
I was just flipping through the latest (Feb '02) Sport Compact Car on the plane home and was reading what appeared to be a preview article on an upcoming test SCC is doing called the Ultimate Street Car Challenge.
The competitors are:
1. A twin-engined all wheel drive 1998 Hyundai Tiburon twin turbo (IHI 6T) with H&R springs and Nitto tires. Runs 10.6 quarter mile on methanol!! Driven by Michael McIntyre (street racer)
2. A 2000 Nissan Sentra SE with a Garret GT ball bearing turbo, done motor and Progress Competition coilover suspension, Toyo T1-S tires and Brembo brakes. Driven by Steve Mitchell (Nissan Employee)
3. 1999 Ferrari 360 Modena F1 with Ferrari Competition springs and Hoosier slicks. Driven by James Chen (owner of Axis Sport Tuning)
4. 1988 Ford Mustang LX with Vortech Supercharger (14 psi), done motor, Lakewood/FRPP drag suspension, Baer brakes, Nitto NT555R tires and a 6 point cage. 500 whp. Driven by Geoff Bennett (drag racer)
5. 2000 Integra Type R with JR Supercharger (9 psi), done motor, Ground Control suspension (Koni/Eibach) and Kumho Victoracer tires. Does 13.5 quarter. Driven by Mark Allen (two time SCCA national champion, two-time SCCA Pro champion, SCCA Super Endurance Road Racing Champion and NIRA Super 4 Quick 8 winner).
6. Turbocharged, supercharged and intercooled 1985 Toyota MR2 with done motor, custom drivetrain, TRD suspension and Kumho/Nitto tires. Driven by Mike Carwin (race fanatic).
7. 1972 Datsun 510 with twin rotor/twin turbo (HKS GT ball bearing) and intercooled conversion, done motor, Motec ECU, 4 880 cc/min injectors (!) and 2 extra 330 cc/min injectors (damn!), RX7 tranny with Quaife LSD, Ground Control suspension (Tokico/Eibach) and Wilwood brakes. Driven by Tod Kaneko (no profession listed)
8. 1994 Toyota Supra with RPS T66 single turbo conversion, HKS exhaust, A'pexi electronics, KYB coilovers, and Kumho Victoracers. Driven by Mani Jayasinghe (regular at NASA events)
9. 1996 r33 Skyline GT-R with HKS GT ball bearing turbos, A'pexi Power FC, Ohlins coil-overs, Brembo brakes and shaved Toyo Proxes T1-S tires. Driven by Justin Skyes (owner/operator of MotoRex).
10. 1990 Nissan 300ZX with JUN internals, modified Greddy TD05 turbo system, custom B&B exhaust, HKS coilovers, Brembo brakes and BFG G-Force KD tires. Driven by Jason Kopocs (no profession mentioned)
All the cars have to compete in this challenge, picked by the readers of SCC from a pool of about 70 applicants. I imagine that the cars would have to compete in a drag race, a slalom run, skidpad and road course events.
First off I must say that I'm impressed that SCC is pulling this test together. Second of all I'm interested in the fact that an SCCA national champion picked a PY Type R to compete in the test with (kudos to him). As you can see he is my pick.
What do you guys think?

All I wanna know is who put this idiot called " R driver" in SCC?
He hits 13's with 9psi, head work, some engine work, slicks, and with what was that 230whp? Oh yeah and the car is hella light!!!!!
I hit that same time with 6psi, stock engine internals, slicks, and 210whp!!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah and with 2700lbs!!!!!!!!!!!!
I can hit 12's with 9psi, street tires, stock engine internals, 2600lbs, and with 250whp!!!!
The only gain I have on him is good tuning with a good ECU setup thats really it. Everything else he has is all most the same, however he has hella more stuff then I do engine wise. Yet I kill him in power, performance, etc... Smells fishey to me...
So I said, maybe he's a bad driver, however that article totally rules that out with stating all his race experience!!!
I call BS on his said power!!!!!! hahahhaha
Would JR put that car in the challenge? No way
Would Comptech put that car in the challenge? I guess so.
But whatever let his car loose to them all. I just thinks its not a good test to put that R up against the other cars.
Off the top of my head I could pick like 5 other JRSC R's that will kill this guys setup. However I will not knock on his driving. His skills are damn good, which makes this car able to compete. However I wish I could fit him with a better JRSC R setup to race with.

oh yeah to say the least.
Any good tuned N/A setup should be able to hit his times.
I just wonder why they would choose a JRSC R that has the same times and specs as a N/A R to compete in this. I mean if they used a JRSC R that is a lot stronger then most N/A R's I would say ok. But to choose a JRSC R that's this weak with 9psi! is crazy IMO.
I'm sure they just wanted the driver and didn't care about the car that much.
Remeber when they tested hella R's that one time and they used a crappy tuned JRSC R to compete agaist hella NA setups and the JRSC R lost!!! Yeah same story here. If your gonna test a JRSC R and compete it, it has to be way above most NA setups and work and run good.

I highly doubt SCC would care about our setups or us writing to them. The trick is to suck someone's d!ck to get in the mag, have an ugly car with tons of random decals to show your so called multi-sponcership, or to jock a company like Comptech, Jackson Racing, etc... to get you in the mag!
What BS! lol
"Just one more reason why SCC is TRASH." Oh yeah couldn't have said it better myself! Dang this makes SCC look as bad as stupid street! lol hahahaha

exactly. Not one company could convince me to suck their nuts and sport their name to get in a mag. The only credit I give is to DSR to allowing me to clown over JR's type R, and the idiots who write these articles.
People like us who keep it on the DL, impress the people who really care and know their ****, unlike some stupid ricer kid who read the article while looking for some new indi-glo gauge faces! hahahahaha

I'm sick of all the magazines, TMR is gone. Super Street is now Stupid Street and full of adds, and the rest are garbage.
ok first of all guys before you start talkin ****...i know the guy w/ the type-r....and he obviously must be doing something right if they invited him back again this year. because they did have the same competetion last year...which mark came in second overall..i went to the shop which his dad pretty much provided funding for(atlantic performance) which is in jacksonville fl...his car was getting around 275 to the wheels....that was about ten months ago..so i would assume he has more power now....which in the magazine it clearly says mark claims his car is making 25 more hp than last year....which is probably more now.....just cuz some of you have ran quicker times doesnt mean he cant drive..he wasnt just handed those titles as being a two time scca national champion for nothing...remember hes the one getting his name out there in pretty much one of the best magazines today.. and all you other guys are not...so im sure hes doing something right....so what is my point? dont talk **** about people you have never even met.....i do understand people have the right to say what they want.....im just sticking up for the guy....who doesnt even post here....so come on guys give mark the credit he deserves....later..
actually I've heard of the guy! Scott here on the board has seen the car. That dyno that guys goes to is BS.
Also your argument makes him look worse in the fact that he hits 13's with 275whp! hahahaha
Anyway, I'm not gonna start internet drama crap. Have him post rather then doing second hand stuff.

GRM is a great mag...sometimes the writing is a little soft, but it's always genuine (i'm loving the series on the novice guy with the VW).
As for the competition, Of course the R is no match for most of that stuff in a straight line, but if the guy's as good as his resume suggests, and the road course and (if they do it) autoX factor in any major way, he stands a good chance...the R is an easy car to drive to the limit, alot of those other beasts are going to overwhelm their drivers i bet. Always root for the underdog

The SCC R in the challenge can't even beat Dennis Grant's AWD talon in Street Modified SoloII or ProSolo (anyone who knows anything about this above statement will all be laughing right now).
Defend his R if you will, but he stopped running it in SM because he couldn't hang with the top Supras, Talons, Neons, etc. That R is ok, but it isn't what I'd call a top-notch setup for this competition. I hope it does well, but when it loses, all the honda-haters will think this is by far the best R out there and give them more fuel to bash our cars.
Again, he ran a 89 Civic Si in HS at the SoloII nationals this year. He chose not to run his R in SM for some reason. I think the reason is because that it probably didn't stand a chance. Hope I'm wrong, but probably not.
Edit: however, now that I am looking through the mag again, none of those cars are prime examples of "the ultimate street car." A lot of them suck. I mean, Nitto tires? Gimme a break! This competition is all about a set of A compound Hoosiers.

dont feel the need to hang all over somebody's nuts.

Mike (Rboosted717) you BS too much about your car and supposedly racing skills. Guys at the ITR Expo say you got your *** kicked in a Drag Race by a N/A JUN car and you sucked on the track. You talk about racing with Skip Barber at Laguna Seca, but guys I know who race with Skip Barber say that they never heard of you or seen you at the races. Grow up and stop talking **** about stuff you don't know anything about.

Talk **** as youy may,Mark Allen is a friend of mine.He doesn't frequent the dragstrip so NO his 1/4 mile times aren't that impressive. However,I would put any amount of my money that noone that posts on this board would beat him in his car or theirs at an autocross.
"The readers of the mag chose the competitors by voting. Nobody else with a nice Type R obviously entered. I think that the article claimed nearly260 at the wheels which means it's in the 250's. The car was tuned by Comptech."
That is untrue the car was NOT tuned by Comptech. They are ******* idiots. My friend Gary tuned the car. When the car was shipped from Comptech it was making 221whp.Gary got 257whp from it.
Whatever happened to the ITR being a car for the "twisties"?You guys change your interestes like your underware. If the car is slow in the 1/4 but an excellent handler you guy rag on how slow it is.If it is fast in a straight line you immediately go to the"let's take it to the twisties"crap.Which is it going to be here? This guy is a national Champ.Which none of you are.He has won mutiple regional and national championships. How many of you have done that? Some of you people talk way too much **** with very little to back it up.

dc2k-specr: Mighty big words there...... be careful, they might bite you in the *** someday.
SGT,explain how they may bite me in the ***.Just curious.I am stating factual information. If that offends you ohwell.

No offense taken here. But this kind of a blanket statement is stupid.
That was a little exageratory.I will say this none of the people that are picking him apart in this thread would be able to compete with him in ANY car.The guy is an incredible driver and has a vast knowledge of suspension set ups and tuning.
I just hate seeing people talk **** about someone when they have never met them. And Rboosted with his better than thou attitude makes me want to puke.
