damn man, that is a lot of money, ive just never paid that much to get it done, i cant believe both the dealer and the independent place are trying to wring that much cash out of you. Its weird, when i got the timing belt changed on my accord they charged me 225 in cash, i just took it to an independent garage...
If those are the prices you're faced with, then yea, have some experienced HT member or Accordinglydone.com experienced member help you out...save some money, ****, they might do all three for the price quote you got for one car.

try and get prices from like 5 or 6 different places and everytime you walk into one place, tell them that you went to another guy and he said he could do it for 325 cash, then the guy will say, 300 cash, then go to another place and tell them the guy said 280 cash, and perhaps they might go a little lower...know what i mean? work it out bro.!

for 225 it cant be a complete timing belt job .... parts cost about that ... a complete timing belt job includes valve cover gasket, cam seal, balance shaft seal, crank seal , oil pump o-ring, timing belt tensioner, balence belt tensioner, timing belt, balance belt, water pump alt belt, and ps belt
if your in the so cal area i do timing belt jobs on accords for 300 with oem parts

Hey. As a shop manager, I gotta say.. don't be cheap asses! People that walk in my door and say "I want a discount" are really not the kind of customers we want and not the kind we would take care of.
For one, the only thing that keeps my shop alive is my customers. If everyone nickel and dimed me I wouldn't make any money and I'd be out of business in no time.
It's one thing if you have a shop giving you some outrageous price, but it's another if he's giving you a fair one... and you STILL ask for a discount.
The bottom line is.. if you want good work done, don't be a cheap *** and take care of your mechanic. If you want to be a cheap *** and shop around for the bottom dollar, just do it yourself and save everyone the aggravation.
This applies to any shop owner.
As far as timing belt work is concerned, for a 97 Accord SE 4CYL, it's a 5.5 hour job to R&R the following:
TIMING BELT
TIMING BELT TENSIONER
BALANCE SHAFT BELT
CAM SEAL
CRANK SEAL
BALANCE SHAFT SEAL
WATER PUMP
I would recommend replacing all of those items. Sometimes you can get a whine from the tensioner if you don't replace it.
So.. 5.5 (book time) x shop labor rate (mine is $85.50) that would equal $470.25 in labor alone + parts. But that is a COMPLETE job. Everything replaced.
If you want to save money and cut corners, do just the belts and water pump. That would be 3.9 hours x 85.50 = $333.45 in labor + parts.
Water pump $57.40
Timing Belt $42.25
Balance Shaft Belt $41.48
Tensioner $66.17
Timing Cover Gasket Upper $9.17
Timing Cover Gasket Lower $9.08
Cam Seal $5.17
Crank Seal $7.45
Balance Shaft Seal $6.17

I can easily beat those parts prices. Damn son, some high *** labor rates, but you gotta put into consideration the location. At my Honda dealership, our rate is 70.00 an hour. According to Honda, and Alldata, an Accord timing belt is 6.6 hours.

Most shop owners will frown on someone that brings their own parts.
Let me ask you this.. when you go to a restaurant for breakfast do you bring your own eggs ?

It was $79. We just raised it. The average in Naples florida is actually 90-100. We have 7 stores. All privately owned.
We use mitchell on demand. 6.6 seems high, are you sure that is for a 97 Accord SE ? You might be looking at another one.

i totally agree ... it is a big headache if the parts they bring are the wrong parts or if there is a defect the customer expects a warrenty on the labor .. so when i so my side jobs i use only my own parts unless it is a part i cant get (aftermarket parts) and in those cases i offer no warrenty for defective parts

I don't really mind if people bring their own parts. But 2 things always happen, the labor becomes inflated and they get NO WARRANTY at all.
If *WE* sell you the parts, you get a lifetime warranty on the parts and 1 year on labor.
The prices I listed on those parts are Honda list price in Naples.
We can get aftermarket parts but I don't recommend using them on your Honda.

So you are saying even with all the covers off it takes 1.6 hours (aprox. $140.) to replace the tensioner, seals and gaskets and $103 for those parts ? Okay I confess I'm a Cheap *** but with this being a Do-It-Yourself based Forum that may be the norm for most users here. IMOHO your figures are Mercedes pricing.

do you have any idea what your talking about ? Honda dealers normally charge 450 for a complete timing belt service and your saying 350 in labor is too much ? do you realize what a mechanic spends to buy his tools ? they spend more in "tools for the trade" then most other professions and people like you like to try to lowball in what you want to pay for labor .... keep in mind your not only paying for his tools you are paying for his knowledge too ....
to put this in perspective would you want to make 20 bucks a hour after spending 15-20 for going to school and spending 20K for tools???? think about it mechanics get paid very little for what they put in to be a mechanic ... think about this the next time you decide to make a ignorant statement like this again

I just had a timing belt assy done, water pump replaced, balancer belt, seals,
external drive belts replaced and headcover gasket done. Parts came out to $291 and labor was $299. Total including tax was $627. Whats a real kick in the *** is that my bro works for a GM Dealer and next to the dealership he works at is a Honda dealer. The service advisor at the Honda dealer game my brother a price of $495 for me to get the work done. Most dealers helps each other out when it comes to prices. Well when the work was done the Service Advisor at the Honda Dealership tells me that he never told my brother that the price was $495. He tells me that he told my brother it was $595.
