what is this crap in the engine compartment?
if it comes off on your finger it may just be oil/greese. if it doesnt and since its so much it looks like it might have been a fire. did you just buy the car? what did the guy say?
Thats definitely not any kinda dirt I've seen. Was the car repainted? Looks like the fenders are completely devoid of that stuff. Maybe fire and then salvaged?
(Dude, Paul!!! Whats up man. Where have you been?!?! )

I think thats from an oil leak somewhere on the motor. possibly a vavle cover gasket leak from what I see on the block. It possibly was getting all over the firewall from the fan blowing
that looks exactly like the crap on the heatshield for the turbo on our passat that im trying to find out where it came from. since turbos get extremely hot, maybe it was a heat induced, in your case, fire. just because stuff on the car dosen't look 'new.' does not mean that it hasnt been replaced. the kinda person that would not clean that up after a fire is the same kinda person that would replace a dirty motor.
YOU GUYS ARE ALL DUMB !
That is the wax based rustproofing that comes from the dealerships...
It is a shitty rustproofing because wherever you spray it, that's where it remains.
An oil based rustproofing seeps into all the knooks + crannys + joints and works better.

where the hell would that rustproofing wax come from? It WASN'T there when the car was new. And there would be no purpose of spraying all that in an engine compartment unless the engine was out and there was frame work needed.

its a mixsture of grease ,oil , and dirt ,i detail cars and see it alot of older cars that are tno cleaned at all, just some one who hasnt opened the hood other then for regular matience
its old school rustproofing. Its a waxy sorta sticky when fresh coating that attracts all kinds of dirt and gross road grime. I work on cars all the time and occasionally come across it. My crx acutally has some remnants of this stuff in the engine bay still. To get it off you need hot water, degreaser and some elbox grease.
i have worked for Honda for quite a few years and i used to do new car prep (undercoat & rustproofing was part of it) it is def. rustproofing and is not something Honda offered it is some bullshit rustproofing the sales department would rip the customers off with!!!!!!!!

It definatley looks rust proofing "spray". I dont know the name but in Finland we use it alot to cover our cars from roadsalt. Its called mass around here, i founded that also from my car. I thought it was dirt also, but it didint clean up until i used lurpentine to wipe it away. You can guess how much work does it cover when its sprayed all over to engine bay.
89efstd you dumbass...
Ofcourse it's dirt and grime. But as stated before by people with experience, that rustproofing attracts crud as a magnet.
I'll chime in. I've seen this crap on more than a few crx'es myself. And it's a bitch to get rid of.
