some help for my friend's AWD wagovan
ok, my friend has a 90 or 91 civic wagon with the RT4WD. I desperately want to find a way to make it quicker. The reason for this is because a few of us at work had a race night where we went to "the local track" and lined em up for a few fun runs. Well it was my crx (pre header) vs. my old 95 awd talon, and my friends wagon vs. a slightly modded Eclipse RS.
The wagon is all stock, and the Eclipse has CAI/h/e. Both are manuals, both are not professional drivers. The wagon was actually ahead through all of first gear, which surprised the **** out of me, and then even through 2nd, and just a fender back at the top of 3rd.
So, tardboy in the RS gloats afterwards about SMOKING it blah blah blah. And then decides that he's going to be smoking my crx when he gets a turdbo in spring.
So my question is, can i get my friend's wagon moving a quick enough to shut up rice boi? I was thinking if it was possible to keep the motor that's in it, since my friend is on a budget, but a head swap would be ok. Is there a head that is an easy swap with his motor, or are we going to have to go to the usual run of the mill bolt-ons?
Budget for this is about $500.

search on here, someone recently did a ZC swap into a 4wd wagovan. They can be had for fairly cheap. Otherwise go with advice up there for the mini-me. I'll post up the link if I can find it. Turbo that and you would be in business and then some.
If you shut up rice boy with a wagovan I'll **** myself. That would be in my top 5 list of coolest things of all time. The fact that you had ANYTHING on him means that the car and/or driver is ****.

1. practice...experience will be the cheapest and best way to pull better times. Go to a "real" track and get better.
2. wheels/tires...while traction isn't so much of an issue with the 4wd, it's probably why he started out ahead. It's one his advantages so build on it. Find some lightweight 13" wheels and put the widest, stickiest tires you can find. There are enough guys running 4x100 civic/integra wheels you might be able to just borrow a set for the run...appeal to their Honda vs DSM nature.
3. Weight...when the day comes, strip it all and go out there naked. No passenger seat, rear interior, spare tire etc. Go out with a 1/4 tank of gas or less. And use the lighter driver of the two of you. If you can knock 200 lbs off where you originally started, it will make a difference.
4. Power...a mini-me or zc is going to be out of your budget at $500. Well, done right anyway....I wouldn't recommend a ghetto swap. Most of the time they are not worth the effort.
I would say one of the stainless Meghan headers at $100-150, an Ebay filter for $40, and a Exospeed SR909 A6 Cam for $200. Spend whatever is left on a custom 2.25" catback exhaust from a local muffler shop.
Get some high octane(100+) race gas...and advance the snot out of the ignition timing...4 degrees is not unheard of.
Despite all of this, if this Eclispe does get a turbo, you're going to have a hard time beating him. Still, -200 lbs and +10-12 hp at the wheels that hooks up with stick tires/4wd will make a big difference.

sweet, so i can get a dohc zc from hmotors for like $525 or something like that. Would that bolt up with the engine mounts and tranny without alot of hassle? And would the axles he has be fine?
what about wiring, is it tough on that kind of swap?
edit: would building the stocker even be worth it if i can get a zc for that price?

What engine does he have to start with? If you already have 4 port injection, the swap would go smooth as butter. At least it does in the other civics. Should drop right in. msn.com said they have 92 and 108 HP. Those look like the dx and si engines. It should be no problem. Wiring may be an obstacle, but good luck!

The AWD Civics ran the MPFI setup, so it is already making about 109 HP. I'm surprized that the Mini-Me doesn't come better recommended in this case.
55shot, zex kit... I ran 9 bottles through my 155K mile car and never even smoked.
Bone stock ( gutted cat, MPFI, K&N filter ) and stock EVERYTHING ( clutch, wheels, suspension ) it ran 15.1@89mph, but honestly that's not going beat a turbo'd 420A talon. Those stupid neon motors haul ***, then break. Just hope his car breaks, is going to be your only chance with a $500 buget..... The RS model talon happends to be the lightest too...

I'm with xxPaulxx - the AWD '88-'91 Civic Wagons are already using the Si engine (D16A6). There are plenty enough proven bolt-ons that will help that engine make a li'l more power without having to resort to a full-on engine swap. Pretty much anything you can do to an Si, you should be able to do to that wagon: Mini-me, I/H/E, etc. Supposedly, the transmissions aren't that robust, so you probably don't want to go crazy with the power anyway (turbo, supercarger, etc., will likely just eat the transmission).

here's a turbo-mini-me RT4WD wagon:

i'd go i/h/e + cam myself, as it's already got an A6. maybe turbo (or JR s/c) later.

ok, i guess i didn't make it clear enough that the RS guy is just a dumb ricer and will never get a turbo. He just spent his load on a cai and header, both of which would be useless if he DID get a turbo.
So I think it would be the most fun keeping the A6 in there and camming it along with some other generic bolt-ons. I'll see what cheap-o's i can find on Ebay.
