Default valve train noise sound clip, comments

b16a head, itr cams, itr valve springs...Motors been in the car for about a month...only 100 miles on it.

http://members.bellatlantic.ne...d.wav

Noise sounds to be coming intake side 3 and 4 close to the dizzy. I took the valve cover off looking for obvious stuff. Car is burning oil too, gonna change out the valve seals this weekend and in turn readjust the valves. ls/vtec setup btw, motor was supposely rebuilt top to bottom 4-5k miles ago. Car then sat for 4 months, i bought that car and took the motor out and refreshed all the gaskets...timing belt etc the works. Car burned a quart of oil in 90 miles, compression test was 215 230 220 220....

Thats with pr3 b16 pistons in the ls block, i couldnt verify that but thats what the guy said i bought it from(friend of mine).

Need some ideas on that noise, not sure what lma's are suppose to sound like but yea need some advice on that noise. The oil burning i dont know if its related but ill guess we'll find out soon.

Hey... i have ls/vtec in my teg too. im using ls block bored 10 over with 10 over SIR pistons & b16a1 head!! Concerning the oil burning; i would say good chance of bad valve seals.... worst case bad rings!! The valvetrain noise; i would say good chance of misadjusted valves.........easy fix!!

Sorry could not get your sound clip!! but i was thinking 1 quart in 90 miles; your car must be running like crap!!!!!could be source of noise if the engine is missing.......... What came first, the chicken or the egg!!! Smartest route, i would say try and source the oil burning/ loss first.....then proceed!!!!

Good god that's gotta be LMA's or something

Lets see- things that can cause noise- Valve lash being way off- Injector ticks-LMA's. It could have something to do with the distributor, but I cant think of what.

Bent valves perhaps? I have that same noise in my ls/vtec, but it only happens between 1500-2000 rpms, not constantly as yours does. Your timing is set and everything?

that noise is at 1500-4k rpms, i was never at idel during that clip until the very end.

i readjusted the valves, same noise. I did the screw driver trick(screw driver to ear) i couldnt pin point it. Sometimes it sounds right next to the dizzy, other times it sounds around the IM. Im gonna jack the car up tomorrow and start it and get under it and listen...

My injectors make some noise but i highly doubt this is them, distributor is also a possibilty. Anything i could take off and check? Head is basicly getting tore down for valve seals....how can i check the lma's? bent valves?

I dont want to really start buying stuff to replace and not fix the sound. Im concerned, i really hoped it was just valve adjustment problem.

Could this be a gas problem? I threw some octane booster in my 93 just to try, no effect. I almost wanna go to my normal gas station and fill up. Timing was set but not with a timing light, but i tried adjusting the dizzy before and it didnt go away.

also, while the car was running i took off the oil fill cap and listened, just sounds like exhaust. Revved it enough to hear the noise and it wasnt any louder then with the filler cap on.

....just passing the info along.

my boys b20vtec had a noise similiar like that but it was a louder rattle. it turned out to be broken valve.. it sounds like something in the valve train.

I really think its bent valves. Search for some of the other threads regarding bent valves and see what they say. You can test LMA's by taking valve cover off and pushing down on each rocker assembly. If they move smoothly and don't bind or anything, it generally means the lma's are good.

argh, and what coulda caused the valves to bend....it cant be anything major if the car still idels and drives fine.....right

read some more on bent valves, my compression test didnt lead me to believe there's a problem.

Im gonna try a few more things, then pull the head i guess.

took the dizzy off today, some play in the end shaft side to side. Rotor has no play inside.

Got under the car and listened, sounds either under the IM or above(head). Sunday i think im gonna take the cams and stuff out, possibly pull the entire head off.

Im running out of ideas, i filled the tank up with 93 and drove it around for about 10miles. Valves sound louder to me, but it could all be in my head. Ill check my adjustments over sunday before i take it all apart. My injectors are pretty loud, but i dont think this is them...I may take the head off and take to a machineist to eye ball.

car runs strong, its hard to drive it normal...haha always want to get on it. ah well heres to $$$

A check the rockers before pulling the head off.when u remove the cams check and see if the oil pressure lock pins r all there. If missing motor will sound like someone put a penny in your head.....good luck

checked the valves, all are still in adjustment, 1or 2 were a little tight but i could fit the next step down gauge in it...say if .008 wouldnt fit, .007 would.

all my vtec rockers push down and rebound pretty nice, non are notchy.

Donfrh, where am i lookin for those?

Improper clearances for piston to wall, or the crank bearing?

Ouch, rod knock. Didnt really sound like my engine when I spun a bearing, though.
