My birthday is coming, and i need to get everything right or im FUCKED!
For my birthday i want to do a JDM D15B engine swap into my 1990 CRX DX.
Now since i have limited car knowledge, i wanted my local super shop to do it. I went and got quote on the price. They wanted ******* $1500! $500 for parts and $1000 for labor!
I said no thanks.
So, im going to do it, but i think it will be a great learning experience, and i beleive that everyone should know more than average about their car.
Now, here are my plans; i plan on ordering the Engine from Hmotorsonline.com.
From them the Engine will cost $435 this will include:
- Motor
- Intake Manifold
- Exhaust Manifold
- Injectors
- Fuel Rail
- Throttle body
- Alternator
- Distributor
-And im not sure on the tranny yet, but i dont think they will include one, so my DX tranny will be fine. If not i can always go to a junkyard for an Si tranny.
OK, i place the order and my shight gets here. Then what?
I know i have to do the DPFI to MPFI conversion, so is there any other special parts involved that will require me to order it. Because if i HAVE TO ORDER IT, having the list on hand and ordering it all at once will be most imperative.
So right now, the only info i need is what to order, other than the hmotorsonline stuff.
Thanks everyone!

if ur goin to go stay obd0 then you need the si ecu, pm6, dizzy. si resistor box, some sort off vtec controller.you wiil need to take the driver side mount bracket off your motor and put it on the d15b. and if you want to go obd1 then you need to get a jumper harrness and have some fun with that. you will need a obd1 dizzy and ecu. thats all i can think off right now
1500$ actually isnt all that bad if u think about it. The shop i used to work at charged around 1350$ and that included a complete JDM D15B, APEXi VAFC II, new clutch, lightened and resurfaced flywheel. It also included the DPFI to MPFI wiring. If u dont have a hoist, never dropped it out of the bottom, or any knowledge of how to physically swap a motor in/out, i can gaurantee you will be kicking yourself in the *** when u get stuck or something goes wrong. Im in no way trying to deter you from doing this yourself....im just layin it all out. Be prepared for a lot of down time.
yeah like he said.. if you have any basic experience with the mechanical electrical areas of automotive technology then go for it.
but know this... i hate to sound discouraging but unless you have an alternate means of transportation or at least extra money for misc crap i wouldn't do it. sounds like you've never done anything like this before and the electrical and mechanical aspects to this project are huge for a newb. just be ready because their is always something that will pop up or go wrong. whether big or small something will come up, will you be able to get the parts or have the knowledge/tools to overcome it is the question.

My first swap, a DOHC ZC into a 91 Si took like a week for me to do, I started on a weekend & finished the next weekend, and I worked on it at night after work as well throughout the week. It also cost more than I had planned. So, Like everyone else has said - make sure that you allow more time than you think it will need, and have extra cash on hand for that random crao that always comes up.
Good luck, and you will learn a lot if you do end up tackling this yourself.

Bump for birthday coming up. Mine's on the 16th!
Make sure you have alternate transportation or something so that you won't be stuck without a ride to work or school during the swap. I've never done one myself but I saw one and it doesn't look too hard. Lifting the engine in and out is the easy part. Have fun wiring vtec. I'm going to do a ZC swap here soon, and I wish you the best of luck. Let us know how it goes.
It's always good to know how to do this yourself because when it breaks its good to know how to put it back together, and it will probably break sometime, and you'll thank yourself for the knowledge you had previously gained.

i hate to say this....but you guys are discouraging a DIY swap? this is what its all about man! Go for it! the best thing youll ever do. I mean if you want to know more than average about your cars, DIY. Dont get me wrong, if you dont have another mode of transportation itll suck for a while, but thatll just make you work quicker and harder. I mean, you do as you may, but i took on my first swap when i just turned 16, and wanted to drive so bad, but now im 17, had a b16 rex for a couple mnths, and am saving up for my next swap plus a little boost...haha. But i say go for it man. Youll save money, learn SO much, and learn to love your car THAT much more.
to that man!!

heh just messing with you, do the swap yourself, if you get stuck theres always people to ask
im no genius about the d15b, but dosent it have multi-stage vtec? i'd suggest trying to source an ecu, too for the vtec. otherwise, a mpfi swap isnt too hard, get a couple plugs, get a computer, run a couple wires, switch some pins around. theres a bunch of great tutorials around for them, just use the search. i'd suggest getting an engine hoist, you could borrow/rent one, or if you have room i've seen them new for less than 200 bucks.
good luck

IMO, the only reason i can see for having a shop do your swap is if you are like in your 30s and have a busy career and have more money than you know what to do with. DIY is perfect for the teenager on a budget. I mean, I could buy a whole other car for the cost of labor on an engine transplant. Knowing about cars could be the single most important hobby you may ever have. Knowing how to do those radiator swaps or dropping a fuel pump yourself saves alot of money, and in some cases, a day's job can save your car from a week in the shop.
My dad had me doing work on cars as early as like 10 years old, and it has gotten me pretty far. There's never a better time to learn than now.

Heres the quote they gave me.
the engine would run between $545 to $600 and the labor would be $1000. (20 x $50 an hour)
The labor has a lifetime warranty though. So that makes me feel comfortable.
Its like you guys said.
I have school, and i have little to know knowledge on cars, let alone wiring a harness.
Should i really dish out the $1500+?

you might want to cosider a zc engine. it doesn't have v-tec so you don't have to worry about wiring.
either way just read as many of the tutorial as you can, even read them more than once. If you do your homework (using search button) you should be alright.
