Default 99 Accord Stereo installation

curious about this....

i want to install an alpine head unit in my 99 accord but want to do a stealth installation, where i can push the head unit far back enough to cover new stereo with the face of the stock stereo. i can do this by prying off the stock face from the stock head, and gut out the back side so that it is as slim as possible, then glue all the buttons/*****/etc in place, and use it as a cover to hide the alpine stereo face. that way i never need to detach the alpine face from the head. people will never know i even have it in the car.

anyone know if i can push the din chassis far enough backwards to do this ? or is there really no room for it ?

If I remember correctly, there is a lot of room behind the stock stereo unit. I did not have a problem putting my new unit in there with all the amp wiring, seems like there was room for more...

Well in my 96 there was plenty of room, and in my moms 99 EX about 2 years ago we took out the stereo (to get the serial # for the sec. code) and it seemed like plenty of room if I can remember correctly. Personally, I'd just mount it the correct way, take off the alpine face when parked and put the stock one on top some how. Good luck with the project tho, sounds like a cool idea!

Sounds like a neat idea.

Post pics of how it looks when you are done. Personally, I don't live in an area where I'd worry about the stereo (my wife leaves her purse, with credit cards and cash on the front seat with the doors unlocked on too routine of a basis, never a problem), but it sounds interesting.

Another idea would be to keep the stock head unit and put in an Alpine trunk mounted CD changer, that's what I did in my '99.

Just use the removable face on the Alpine deck. When you leave the car take the faceplate with you or lock it in the glove box. If someone actaully tries to steal your deck with out the faceplate then you should be investing in an alarm system and not a new deck.

you would need to push the deck back about an inch, maybe a little more. you'll need to fabricate some brackets in order to do it of course... and while you drive around with the alpine deck visible, you're going to have an ugly gap between the deck and the trim.

IMO, i would just take the detachable face off... either way you're going to be taking something off and putting it back on each time you get in and out of the car, so you might as well take the face with you for safe keeping.
