Snow is no big deal to the R!
I love this car more and more every day. Most of the city is shut down today as by the end of the day we will have 12-15" of snow, and there is allready a good amount of snow on the ground, but the R took me to work flawlessly. With snow tires, this car drives more confidently than many 4X4's, I can't imagine snow tires on an AWD car. Its just awesome! It has actually been fun to get out in the snow and see how she drives.

All the garage queen wussies need is a good set of snow tires and your paint is ready for plenty of salty goodness.

here is a snow storm aftermath picture from last year, the car definitely got a good wash and wax soon after this picture was taken

-Larkin who was happy with the performance this morning

I have a '97 Subaru legacy AWD with snow tires as my winter beater while my M3 is stored for the winter. The suby is unstoppable, freezing rain, snow, ice, you name it. As long as you drive reasonably, you will not get stuck.

I actually have 195/60/15 Bridgestone Blizzak WS-50's. I chose this size as I got a good deal from a local firestone dealer since I have a firestone card and they send me awesome coupons all the time. Also I thought the extra ground clearance would be nice.

I'm not one of those people that thinks the R should be a pampered garage queen that never gets raced and only gets zymoled to death.
That said--god DAMN, man!!! That is painful to look at. I still get squeamish seeing good cars subjected to the brutality of winter. You're definitely keeping it real.

The undercarriage is the bigger victim. It's easy to keep paint looking nice (with the exception of road salt chipping the living f@ck out of the front end), but the undercarriage corrodes like hell after a couple of rough winters.
Still--props to being a winter trooper.

lol. Subies aren't quite unstoppable
I watched the Outback down the street from my dad sit and spin in our most recent snow storm. I enjoyed watching "the beauty of All Wheel Drive as he sat and spun in front of his driveway. On unplowed streets even the AWD cars and two drive SUVs/Trucks were getting stuck in the ruts (not even the snow banks). Ironically our CRV didn't have any issues and was on the OE tires with over 46K miles. Ground clearance and having AWD were the keys.
And FWIW, the CRV on bald tires was better than my ITR on brand new blizzaks...in fact it kicked the sh*t of the ITR. The ITR was fine up to 3-4 inches, after that...forget about it.

W3RD to the CR-V. My wife's 99 CR-V EX is so good in the snow it's scary.
I think the dud who got stuck in the Subie might not be a very good snow driver, though. I've driven dopped civics (on snow tires) in some gnarly snow for almost 10 years and I've never had problems. An AWD, ABS-equipped Subie would be one helluva step up.

Good call. I'll probably do 195/60s next winter. Pay up for Expo and see you there!

Reminds me of all my snowboarding ventures. I to, rocked some quality snow tires and not once did I ever feel like I was going to lose control. But on the other hand, I've had about 9 solid years of snow driving experience. Well, enough thread jacking from me. This is a quality post and thanks for bringing back memories with those cool pictures.

Over new years i went up with some friends to the alps with the ITR. Ive driven her in snow in town a few times and played in the snow in parking lots to get a feel for her. Little did i know the way back there was a snow storm that hit on the way home. The only way to get up some of those hills was in drift mode! I had no chains at the time but the teg pulled through no problems!
I'm also not one that believes cars should be garaged all the time.
I store mine in the winter though not cause of the bad weather, but more cause of the bad DRIVERS. All I need is someone to lose control and hit me. In my beater I could care less if someone wanted to play bumper cars with me LOL
