Default Will Finally own an EF Civic in 3 days!

Ok so i'm going to pick up a '90 HB 1.6 16v (UKDM) on Saturday! Apparently it's in average condition for it's age and has no major rust. It's only going for £350!! so

I'll probably end up buying it but i was wondering what are the best things to look at that are problematic/expensive to fix with these cars? where is the rust mainly a problem etc etc

I've had a wee look but most of the information comes up for the CRX and not the HB.

I'm excited lol, after having my EK4 for 18 months and selling it about 1 year ago i'm feeling withdrawl symptoms!!

Another thing, how will this car compare to my EK4? speed, handling, quality, and most of all fun?!!?

A small pic of the EF (well EE in UK i believe?) i'll be buying..

Totally standard, owned by a woman for the last 5 years so i'll be expecting scrapes on bumpers etc, and will need a service lol

Congratulations on your purchase.

Common problem areas on Civic/CRX...
(keep it in perspective, we're talking about a 15 year old car. It's still more reliable then most.)

1. headgaskets...that shitty composite gasket Honda used fails as the miles climb. New headgaskets are all metal.
2. AC controls...they get a crack right between the temp control **** and the rest of the buttons/switches. It's just a bad design.
3. Driver seat outside bolster...simply wears out.
4. Main relay and igniter...one or the other eventually fails. They're relatively cheap and good insurance to replace proactively as the car gets older.
5. Sunroof(if equipped) drain tubes clogging, leading to a host of secondary problems.
6. Condensation in tail and headlights...annoying. You can either spend a lot of time/energy fixing or just replace.
7. Factory floormats discolor with age/UV exposure...can potentially look like a smurf.

thanks for the info

from what you've said there, there doesn't seem to be any major problems that are difficult to rectify... apart from the sunroof drain tubes which could lead to rust, roof lining? etc etc

I plan on stripping it down eventually and ridding it of all its cancer and "minting" it up as obviously being an old car i'm expecting it.

Hopefully it'll be a good'un, just need to wait and see.

i would also love some pics... bump it up for scotland, my grandparents were both born in Edinbourogh, and i hope to visit someday. You might have the typical 88-91 rust forming on the rear wheel wells towards the back of the car... you might also want to remove the piece of weather stripping **** on the inside of the wheel well lip because that can hold a lot of road salt and **** in, it and make it rust worse.

i asked the guy what the engine code was D16** but he doesn't know much about it..

it's a UK car and was wondering what the engine is so i can have a search on performance mods etc etc whilst i wait for the car. is it an A9 (130bhp)?

I think there was only one 1.6 16v (other than the B16) in the UK and it's a DOHC.

Sorry if it's a stupid question

I just want to do a search on the engine to see what's possible all motor, or whether i should go with a turbo (not to fond of turbo'ing another car).. plus i'm looking to see whether ITB's would be a good worthwhile project.

cheers.

Welcome dude, it's good to see some people from all over on Honda Tech.

What is an A9? Your engine may be a D16A6 (that is what it is here in the US at least).

You may want to consider a so called "mini-me" swap, which is a VTEC head attached to the bottom end of the engine you have. There is a lot of info about it on here.

Good luck!

i think the A9 is basically the same as your ZC?.. well roughly anyway..

DOHC, the A6 is the SOHC if i recall correctly.

yeah i've heard about the mini-me swap but i take it this is for SOHC engines, and i'm not sure if i can use a B-series head on the A9 but i'll have a look.

N/A all the way!

OH! I see, you have a ZC... Ok, that makes sense to me now (I'm a little slow, it is 2:30 in the morning here).

lol well i think it's basically the same as a ZC.. and from what i've been reading the only difference is the exhaust manifold (header) is slighlty different.

hi mate im from the UK , if that car in the pic is what your looking at then its been hit, it should have colour coded bumpers and a power buldge on the bonnet , that one pictured has neither so beware,

the engine in the car IS a D16A9, i have have a 1.6-16 before and loved it , they handle and perform A1 with minimal cost

ive now moved on to the 1.6i-VT

good luck

Jim

yup thanks Jim, i thought it should have body coloured bumpers especially as it has BC'd wing mirrors.

the car is a trade-in, the woman that had it drove it in at time so it can't be bad (although she trade it in before the MOT expired? but surely the dealer would have checked it out first anyway). Plus if it was quite bad surely they wouldn't have bothered to fix it?! Hope it's ok, they say it is but I'll check it out anyway.. no harm done.

I really want rid of my sierra asap as well (it's just had a prang lol)

yes they were on all models above the DX here in the UK from 88-91 only the dx had black bumpers, my 1.6-16 had colour coded bumpers and mirrrors too

good luck with it , the engine is worth about 150 quid if its running ok i would think,

let us know how you get on mate

cheers

Jim

Yeah, i'm pretty sure. Rover used Honda's D16A7, and A8 at their cars. With diffrent valve covers we are used to see.
