Default VTEC on the 05 RSX feels weaker than Previous RSX's what did they change

My friend has had his 05 with the new K20, we've installed an intake, but for some reason the vtec engage feels weak and the VTEC sounds muffles as if something is restricting air flow like its still running the stock air box. I'm puzzled do you guys have any theories?

The 2005 rsx S is supposed to run a somewhere around a mid 14.I havent driven one though. It could be that honda has tuned it so that the vtec transition is smoother than previous years, which should broaden the powerband.
