Default Timing

When my buddy changed my distributor is there any correct way to do the timing because it has a little rough idle and a backfire in the exhaust...I think thats how you tell when the timing has to be changed on it right???Whats the oem specs on the ignition timing??? I gotta go down there in 25 min.
