Default integra trunk shocks - recurring problem!?

Hi Folks,

A friend of mine told me about this site and the knowledgeable folks here, so i'm hoping someone will be able to help. First time using, so please forgive my newbeness.

I have a '00 integra SE (Canadian model ... i think would be LS in the U.S.), 3 door with hatch model.

At around 60k on the car, i believe it was in our cold Canadian winter, my hatch shocks stopped working - i.e. - no more lift on them at all, as though completely discharged.

After having to push really hard, Honda did eventually help me out - replaced both and working fine.

My car is now just over 100k, and in the past couple of weeks, my 'new' hatch shocks stopped working. This time though, i was shutting my hatch one day, and I actually one or both discharge, after I shut the hatch, like a seal went, and hearing air escape. After that, no lift again. It's pretty heavy holding that open for the groceries!

I know these things happen, but I can't believe this would happen twice, to me. I have friends with similar aged integras living in similar climates (same city in Canada) with no issues.

Here's a potential kicker... my Integra SE has a 'type R' spoiler on it, rather than the standard one. I'm wondering if the additional weight of the bigger spoiler is too much for the shocks. I bought the car right out of the showroom with a bunch of mods to it (the dealer has already done, but with all standard integra oem parts... nothing out of the ordinary).

So i'm wondering if there's a similar problem with integra type R's. I've never heard of any, and of course, they have the larger spoiler. I'm wondering though if honda actually has a different model hatch shock for the type R to accomodate the weight. Perhaps the dealer added the different spoiler, but not the associated shocks required.

I'd just like to get the problem solved once and for all. Someone suggested to me that I use extra support over the hatch shocks.

My questions are:
1 - have any other integra owners met with the same issue?
2 - any have it recur?
3 - anyone have a solution?
4 - does anyone know the part numbers for integra hatch shocks, as listed by honda? I'd really like to see if there's a different one spec'd for the type R than for other integras, and see if in fact I never had the right one for day one, as per the dealer mods.

Thks to all in advance for your help. Happy motoring!

When I bought an OEM spoiler from acura it came with new shocks. The instructions mentioned that I should take out the original ones and replace it with these.
I think these are "stronger" made specifically for trunks with spoilers.

you can search http://www.acuraparts247.com for actual part numbers.
you can also search http://www.acuraautomotiveparts.org for parts, but they only post reference numbers.

i cant search the 247 site right now, but the other site does list a different reference number for the type r vs the ls.

and welcome to honda-tech

The acuraparts247.com site shows some different number from model to model. I checked three models, the 2001 ITR, the 1999 GS, and the 1999 RS... here's what I found... notice the 2001 ITR and 1999 GS have the same part number, while the 1999 RS has a different part number.

2001 Integra Type R
021 74820-ST7-326 STAY ASSY., R. 1 2001 Acura INTEGRA 62.57 50.06
029 74870-ST7-306 STAY ASSY., L. 1 2001 Acura INTEGRA 68.22 54.58

1999 Integra GS
020 74820-ST7-326 STAY ASSY., R. 1 1999 Acura INTEGRA 62.57 50.06
029 74870-ST7-306 STAY ASSY., L. 1 1999 Acura INTEGRA 68.22 54.58

1999 Intagra RS
020 74820-ST7-325 STAY ASSY., R. 1 1999 Acura INTEGRA 62.57 50.06
029 74870-ST7-305 STAY ASSY., L. 1 1999 Acura INTEGRA 68.22 54.58

The hatch struts don't work so well in the winter weather but they should last longer than 50 to 60k kms. I replaced my first set at 145k kms, they should be the heavier duty ones since I have a stock spoiler on my GSR.

My buddy's have just gone too and he has 150k kms on his 2000 GS.

Get the heavier duty ones and you should be good to go. They're pricy, ask the parts guy for a discount.

Thks all to date for your posts.

Your good info confirmed my suspicions. Thought I'd update you on the situation.
I called my local Acura dealer - talked to the parts guy. He claims that it's the same part number for all the hatch shocks for all the integras, regardless of model, thus inferring no diff. ??? ...and the kicker... they want 115$ CDN per shock (just the part, not installed, and before tax!)

So I called another local dealer just a bit further away - talked to the parts guy there. He immediately agreed "oh yeah, for sure it's a different shock for the type R to accomodate the spoiler". He went away to check the specs/drawings. He came back to the phone and he was puzzled. He was looking at the tailgate assembly sketches (which I've seen online). He said it spec'd a number for the hatch shocks and even said 'not including type R'. So then he checked the same thing for the type R, but it provides the SAME part number for the hatch shock. He was baffled. He said he talked to his boss who was also sure it has to be a different part. He is looking deeper into it and is going to get back to me. Could anyone have thought a simple honda part could be this complicated?

I think my next stop will be 1-800-honda-customer-service and see if I can get some definitive from them.

I'll keep ya'll in the loop!

maybe you can find someone with those trunk shocks for cheaper than 115CDN. I just bought a 2000GSR and the shocks are gone, and the hatch is real heavy. Not to mention you look like a tool having it close over you when you are looking through the trunk.
