So anyone wanting pics of my SPU car?
Should look something like this when done
Engine is a Suzuki Hayabusa 1300gsxr engine with the 6 speed sequential trans. It can be bored & stroked easily to 1600cc or so i am told and makes 173hp stock.. a shiteload more bored...
So far the steel price has been the #1 problem.. other than that it appears every new idea means new tools needed..
I'll keep you all updated!
I think thats a yes/ no type thing..
The good is you dont always have to pay more because now and then things like 9" shock lengths are cheaper than ones designed for appications and you can get away with other options that arent really vehicle specific...

The finished car looks a lot like a Donkervoort...
http://www.donkervoort.nl/
The grille and mirrors look a little different from the current model. Maybe that photo is of an older model.
Want2race: Looks like you are starting a Locost build there...yes/no? I have ben working on one for a while that is going to have R1 power. I have had zero time to work on it in the past year (I have been finishing my detached garage and have had a lot of projects to do on the CRX) but hope to get going on it again in ernest soon.
PS: Welding has to be tough on those bare hands...

me after keeping my head down for almost 6 hours of welding..
I never smile so this is a rare one!
Stopping poiunt for the day.
To the above questions.. Final cost is estimated around $6.000. I dont intend to do it cheaply nor do I intend to pay more for anything I can do myself, and I know no limits of what i can try!
Its a lotus Super 7.. No kit.. all the kit makers are a bunch of **** suckers in the US. They either want $9500 for the ****** kit and you still need a donor for things like spindles, brakes, engine trans etc... Why woudl I bother if i can do it myself cheaper and better!
And those english kits just cost too much with the current sucky USD!

It is.. I had gloves on but a spark went into the glove and burnt thru the webbing on my left hand between the fingers.. So I am reluctant to use them now.. I should have all the welding done fairly soon I hope! AKA tomorrow!

So what plans are you building from?
The Locost started as a build from scratch concept in the UK. The prices for the kits are pretty high now for what you get. Not worth the money.

My plans are from a lazer measuring device made by FARO ( i also own shares...)
Basically I took measurements of a caterham chassis and I now know everything they know simply by moving the lazer around! Very few things are left in the details. My backup is Jim Mcsorleys CAD drawings but mine are a drop smaller than his.

Interesting.
Yep. The Caterham frame is a bit smaller than the McSorley "book" frame.
I bought one of the early stage 1 kits from CMC (back when they were less than $2k). I have basically had to re-engineer the whole thing. Both the front and rear suspension have been redesigned with better geometry and proper contol arms and linkages have been fabricated. Knowing what I know now, I would have built the whole thing from scratch and been the beter for it.
Actually, once I get this car going at some point, I want to start with a clean sheet of paper and design a purpose built racing seven (SPU or whatever class it will go in).
You know NASA has a se7ens challenge series out west...and NASA Southeast was wanting to get a Kit Car Challenge series going (KCC) right? It would be neat to get enough interest and folks coming out on the east coast.

ye CMC are a bunch of **** suckers! I called and said " I want a frame.. call me and I will give you my credit card number..." I heard nothing from them..
As far as suspension geometry I think i have it mostly worked out.. In front I am going to use an inboard suspension setup with one single shock ie a push pull type setup.. I still need to get a better idea of how it would work.. ie simulate it..
I would build the car for a series but since i dont know it will be here why short myself ya know ?i set my goal as 1.30 for road atlanta so its high expectations but I think its do able with wide enough rubber!

They are actually very nice people...but they do a poor job of responding to customers and are pretty slow at filling orders. That tends to **** people off... Even the very best in the kit car industry seem to have shortcomings from what I have seen. You best not be in a hurry if you want to build anyone's kit.

true- but this is business. . I am not looking to make them my new friends.. I have talked to Steve a few times and he talks a good game but doesnt deliver it when he says he will..
As for a kit.. Who needs one ? Kits are for people who lack vision/skill..

Agreed - It is a business. In this day and age people expect in stock and on time.
As far as kits go. Some people don't have the skills, time, or know how to build from scratch...but still have enough ability to put a kit of parts together. They get thier own sense of satisfaction that way. Like I said, if I had it to do over again, I would start from scratch.
Good luck on your build. I know that I will be interested in how it progresses.

Are you going to put the same level of atention to detail on this that you did with your CRX?

Nope.. CRX was more of a race car only with the just get it done mentality!
This is probably going to be super light/rather cleanly finished car.
BTw- whats your comment supposed to mean ? Do you think my CRX was half assed ?

Interesting project and doing it sans plans shows a lot of gumption. One of my co-workers bought the CMC book some time ago, has bought several powerplants for it (Ford 1600cc Kent, Datsun L20, etc.) while he already had many spare BMC Spridget drivetrains from the family's racing Bugeye but he completely lacks the actual fortitude to really start and follow through with the project. Lots of bluster but no real activity. We tried to convice him to buy an existing frame so he had something real and proper to start with but he is adamant that he would only be happy if he welds it all up from scratch...which we know he will never really do.
Good'onya for jumping in with both feet. Good luck on making it work and being safe. Keep us updated on the project.

Thanks.. I'll give ya a ring when I need shocks!
I bought a reverse box today! Need it to be street legal and maybe get out of a sand trap or 2...
OPk I'm off to weld some!

Yes, I thought it was quite half-assed
