shipping a type r tranny via UPS
Hi,
I just received a brand new ITR transmission and I literally witnessed the UPS driver drop the package from the dolly onto the ground.
Now - I realize UPS doesn't handle each package like fine china, and I realize an ITR tranny should be pretty tough.
But - should I be concerned about internal damage? The exterior seems ok...
Thanks!

Make sure you follow it up with UPS. It should be okay, but I have a friend with a 3000GT VR4 and UPS broke his clutch he ordered and didn't pay for it. It couldn't have fallen that far, or did it? Anyway, it should be cool.
If the box was rated at 100+ lbs. and it was properly packaged you should have nothing to worry about.
If it was poorly packed and it was dropped 6+ inches yes damage could occur. You should however see cracks on the outside of the casing before any damage is caused to the internals. The trans. casing is not that thick.

Yea follow up say its fucked up, when i got my R block from acura fed ex drop it repacked it in a 35lb box not even back on the origanal crate or 1 like it and left it at my house. I open it and the oil pan is bent and the casting for trans bolt was bent , so i bitched them out also with acura and ended up getten another bran new R block and fed ex let me keep the old 1 as welll. So i made out hopefully u will

I've shipped trannies using FedEx and they have always arrived in perfect condition.
The best way, which is the method I use, is to build a wood crate and fill it with an expanding styro-foam with the tranny already inside, it creates a huge shell and allows for no movement. Once the tranny arrives, you just gotta crack/chisel the shell with a knife.

you think the guys at UPS getting paid minimum wage actually care?
sad but true.
i know two ups guys over in michigan who break everything that looks semi expensive by throwing it around on their lunch break

I've experienced many things that have been improperly handled by both UPS and FedEx. I would carefully examine the trans and definitely call about the guy who dropped it especially if you witnessed it. Good luck with it
The moral of the story: try to buy local (or at least within a reasonable drive) and pick up. Also remember that if the item has to be truck line shipped, it can actually be cheaper to drive a few hundred miles to pick it up. Even if you have to stay overnight in a motel. Also, when you actually pick up, you can check things out to make sure that everything is good before you pay. This is ESPECIALLY true if you are buying used goods. When you order online, you really don't know what you will get until you actually DO get it. And so much of the time, people end up disappointed.
