crack on bottom of tranny.
I was changing my oil on Saturday and noticed a crack on the bottom of my tranny where the transmission housing bolts up to the main housing. It is about 1/2 in long and 1/8th inch wide. It is not on the egde of the mating surface.
Could I JB Weld this closed for now until I can get to my dads to weld it or should I just wait to weld it? I have not driven it since.
Will the JB Weld hold up?
thanks
Mike

If possible, wait until you can weld it. If you put JB weld on it, you will have to grind it all out...and it may not stick if the surface is oily anyway.
I would weld it, cast alum is so dirty to weld, but it will hold up better. Just a shot of a cracked DSM tranny i welded, grease smells good when it burns

weld it
when i first got my se-r running, the trans had crack on a previous weld on the case. we ground everything down, cleaned everything, and added a brace. it worked, the case never failed again...3rd gear decided to break instead
and tranny fluid really smells when its burned

If you use JB, I will warn you. I used it and was constantly checking/filling up my tranny with fluid until one day, on a short 30-minute highway trip, it left me in the middle of no where with 1st and reverse. Luckily I was able to slam and hold the tranny in 3rd and got to a dealership on the edge of a small city. Towing it back was costly.
Just saying, JB, if used, should have a ground out/cleaned area first (I used brakekleen and a die-grinder) and applied in a thick manner. Also let it cure for the full time.
Good luck.

Is that a TIG weld in the pic ?
Any truth to TIG welds effecting bearings etc ?

just make sure u clean it damn good... aand after uc done that... clean it again... it can be a pain but it can be done... just be careful as to how big the crack is and how much heat u put to it... aluminum as with alot of metals likes to warp when too much heat is applied
Yes that is TIG, ive heard stories that a bad ground or a ground too far away from where you are welding, could cause a spark and some gears could tack together, but ive never had it happen....

He's probably referring to what was posted just above your post. Electricity will travel the path of least resistence. If that path is through a bearing, it can arc between them and make a bad spot on the bearing. It's like if you ground a metal table and then you're welding something that's sitting on it...and you bump it and the arc jumps and makes a bad spot on the table and your piece. This bad spot can be on a bearing...and then make it not spin freely anymore.
I would imagine that if you were welding on a crank in an engine, and grounded to the block, the arc could actually go between the bearing and crank, welding them together...causing the bearing to spin with the crank. Rare, I'm sure...but something to be aware of.

Well I am gonna try and JB weld it. I need the car by tomorrow. If I had a trailer I would weld it but don't. HOpefully they JB will hold up and then I can drive to his house and do it.
thanks for the help.
