Default Are there any SOHC believers??

It seems that everyone hates on single cam cars here, but are there any people who have a single cam engine and love it? Is anyone here pushing 150 at the wheels on a SOHC engine? Thanks for the replies i advance.

ihave one. i like it alot. i am planning to do a swap in the near future, but there isnt anything at all wrong with the sohc motors and they have lots of performance parts on the market. 150 hp in a single cam? yes, but the cost and/or ease is going to be determined by which single cam motor you have (i.e.: d16z6, d16y8, d15?, and a couple of others i dont know).

The reason theres not a LOT of love for SOHC motors is just for the fact that for them to make any serious power, it costs $$$$$$$$$$

BTW Great to see another person from memphis on here

yeah right for the price of a b16 swap i could have a REAL fast single cam in my CRX that would blow away most b16s...price doesnt hold single cams back its knowledge

My 98 EX takes out the 99-01 Si's in 1/4 miles like it aint ****. I love it. They're always like, what do you have done to your Si? And I always make sure to let them see the power of the SOHC. Hehehe.

But I know it's really nothing, but parts have been cheap. I've blown the head once before and got another for $200 and did the labor myself with the help of some friends. But all in all it's been a really good car. Although there's no denying the DOHC (side)

I just love this mini beast.......

135 crank HP from a little 1.5L with just simple bolt-ons!

My Z6 with similar pieces is making about 140 hp NA and over 200 on the juice.

I switched from a b16a with CTR tranny and many more goodies on it back to world of cheap d-series....
not pushing 150whp yet...but planning on about 130-135whp or so....on my 1.5l sohc vtec....that with spending only $1000 (including the motor/tranny and parts)....

it was to watch all does guys who spent $3000+ on their B16A swaps and being wiped by 1.5l sohc...that cost 1/3 of what their spent...

Current/and future Mods (to come in few weeks):
D15B SOHC VTEC (JDM specs)
S20 LSD tranny
96+ EX intake manifold and GSR TB
Zex 59300 camshaft
Skunk2 cam gear
Lightspeed 1pc 4-2-1 header
Chipped ECU
and intake either blitz or Mine's
My EG4

I'm running the stock motor w/ an aem in my 95 dx hatch. I love it. I went back to 14's, did a small weight drop(cf hood, gutted rear)and its pretty quick for what it is(its not a race car but its fun for me). I have had the car 4 years and havent put a dime in the motor(repairs). I would like to add a header and exhaust soon. I thought about a swap, but I might just work with what I have to save some cash.

I have lotsa respect for you sohc guys now. Met a guy the other night in aCRX with the stock Si engined, had the head ported, and milled, and otherwise entirely stock, so he said. had a cheapo intake and stock manifold. He kept up with my buddies h22 prelude tilll around 80mph on the street. prelude had cai, headers, cat, exhaust, pulleys. not that I condone street racing or anything, but sometimes a little spirited race on an empty highway is fun if your responsible...
Anyhow, suprised me and made me wonder what is possible with these, even though I still like the smoothness of the dohc motors.

i love me 93 soch 1.6 vtec its nice little engine. yeah i would not mind more power. but anyone can swap engines or add turbo try getting N/A soch to go fast thats challenging.

Mine is almost fully build havent taken it to a dyno yet, but to my and my shop estimations i should have around 150 may be even more

sohc is a turd
you can polish a turd, but its still a turd
get a dohc and start with what a built sohc would make

I just bought a 1.6 SOHC last week, and so far I love it. My primary reaons for buying it were: it was cheaper to buy, doesn't demand premium gas, and I couldn't find a DOHC VTEC. Mostly the latter.

But, I gotta say, driving this car is really a blast. 125 horses might not be that many, but pulling something this light, it certainly seems like it. So, if you want a fellow SOHC believer, here's one.

However, once I've owned the car a bit longer, I can already see myself asking how to make it go faster.

dr. cortez,
here are advantages of the d-series turd if you haven't noticed:
1) price (at times 1/50 of a b-series swap) ($500 vs $5000 ITR swap)
2)cheap parts and avalibility of parts
3)lighter by as much as 180lbs in some cases
4)easier to smog or pass emission
5)more respect when you kick some b-series ***
6)easier to stay on top in your racing class, as we know hybrids (go to highly modifed class, where they usually finish last)
7)also if i can run 14's with spending less then $1k (or less then $500), and its fun when guys with their b18c only run low 14's, while spending over $3-5k

SOHC is by no means a turd. You sound like the guy that just got his *** handed to him my the "turd" and is all pissed about it. What motor do you have, how much HP? What times do you run?
It is easy to make gross generalizations without stating your grounds which you speak from. Try something called "common sense", God gave the commom dog this. Do you have any?

I have no idea what you are talking about. Whos side are you on?
I am a SOHC owner, soon to be turbo'd myself. I agree that there is potential
in the sohc, no matter which one. Except for the automatic DX, that thing is a
******. I am not condoning calling a SOHC a turd though. I was merely using his own vocabulary to make him feel like a jack ***. I hope it worked.
