The major difference between the two is some of the programming that each of them carry. Sirius has play by play action of the NFL. They will soon be carrying Howard Stern. XM will be carrying MLB this coming spring, and they have a NASCAR station. Right now, they also broadcast college football games. The ESPN channel is very popular on XM as well. As far as I know, Sirius is completely commercial free, where as XM is not (they are commercial free on all music stations only. Talk and news channels, etc. still have commercials) Altough XM's monthly fee is only $9.99 compared to the $12.99 of Sirius.

I've got XM and hate it. It's factory in my truck, and will be dumped soon. There are not any channels that play newer rock/alternative music. There is one rap/r&b channel, and one that plays Top20. Sirius has a lot more channels with newer music.

xm has 35 commercial free music channels and sirius has 60. if you have an aftermarket unit, it should have on the front of it whether it is xm or sirius ready. if so, you can buy a dedicated satellite unit and control it through the headunit

I've never played with XM, but I do have Sirius (thanks to the howard stern promo). I love it. It's installed in my commuter, so I get a solid 2+ hrs of listening time everyday and it's great.
