Alternator keeps breaking... (searched)
i just put in my 3rd alternator within the past year. can they be over revved and broken that way? when i had the swap done the accord pulleys were put on so i could use the belt i already had. earlier in '04 i put a new accord alternator in, since the pulleys match... but since then theyve broken 3 times. could they be internally falling apart or failing because im revving 2k higher than the car it was intended for? or are the alternators the same except for the ribs on the pulley?
why do you keep buying the accord alternator if it keeps breaking? Just buy the one that's designed for the engine next time
btw.. what motor are you talking about anyways?

oh, sorry. i have a 93 h22 in my accord. i keep getting the same alternator, cause replacement is free. but i was just wondering if there is a difference between an accord and prelude alternator... other than the pulley.
it just quits charging. but i know theyre arent supposed to be replaced 3 times a year... so something is definetly wrong. nothing has ever physically broken.
OK, the problem is most likely somewhere else in your electrical system, and it fries your alternator. Take it to an electrical shop, not a regular mechanic.
Same thing happened to me a while back. After 2 alternators, took it in and the guy had it fixed in 20 minutes. Cost me like $30.

ok thanks man.
just wondering, is there an auto electric chain of stores out there? i dont know of any... im used to just going to a mechanic for any problem i had. do you happen to know what the problem ended up being with yours.

Mine has an intermittent short somewhere.
As for the shop, I don't know of any chain, but the phonebook should have a bunch of shops. I think they would be under "automotive electrical" or something to that effect.

I had the same problems before. I went through about 4 alternators before I found a used oem alternator from HT, no problems since. It's the cheap remanufactured units that cant handle the revs. I would record the voltage on my rev/speed meter and the thing would quit charging around 7k rpms. Try and find a prelude or an oem one.
