Default My tac is jumping, but no problems?

I recently notice my tac stopped working all together this morning and this afternoon it started jumping around and finally settled and now works fine. What could this be? I had a bad ignitor in my civic and it jumped, but the car also bogged down when it did this so I don't know if it could be that.

I have a 98 cl 2.2 so it is basically an accord. Do I need to replace the ignitor or was it just a freak occurance? Also, my brake light comes on only in drive gears and not P or N (park and neutral on the automatic) and sometimes the ABS light comes on. All these problems started last night and the tac I noticed this morning so maybe they are related? HELP! TIA

Problem is now gone and I still don't know why it started. Maybe the rain got into some electronics??

I had the same problem(96 accord). I let it go, and it stopped working all together, causing the car to run bad. It is the speed sensor. You need to replace it. When it goes the check engine light will come on and it will effect the cars idling.

But doesn't the speed sensor have to do with the speedometer?? I was having tacometer problems of it cutting in and out and also brake light and abs light probs. They have gone away completely for the past 2 days.

There was also no driveability problems what so ever. Wierd eh.

Thats what i though and was told by numerous mechanics, but i took my car to a perfomance place and the first thing they said, it is your speed sensor. i changed it and have had no problems yet.

My tach was jumping around and replaced the ignitor with an old one I had sitting around. The jumping went away.

You are mistaken. Speed sensor has nothing to do with the tach.

Your ecm gets input for the engine speed via the crank position sensor (CPS). THe signal travels through the ICM. So it is possible that from the sensor all the way through the ecm, your electrical connection may be weak. Best thing to do is to inspect the connections and make sure they are not loose or contaminated with oil. THen if the problem returns and you get sick of it, you may need to test the voltage output of the CPS using a multimeter to see if indeed you are losing voltage at the ecm.

The problem, I am pretty sure, is your ignition coil. I had the same symptoms you are describing.

yes, it seems as if your ignition control module is going out, it is located inside the distributer...
