Was wondering if anyone in the So. Cal area could tap my B16 head for me. Heard that it was real easy and just trying to see if I could save some money. I'm located in the 626 / West Covina area.
Let me know.
Thanks

I hear from people that tapping a head for LS/VTEC is pretty easy so I was just trying to see if anyone knew how to do it just to save some money instead of bringing it to a machine shop...

uhh.... no dude. The B16 is a VTEC head, so why do you need to get it tapped for VTEC when its already there? ::shrugs::
You might be thinking of tapping the block for LS/VTEC. But i wouldnt do that, i would just get a kit for it, so no machine work is needed.

Not that i know of, but then again i could be wrong. Look into the conversion kit. If it needs to be tapped let me know how because i know places that you could sent it and there not expensive.
But i highly doubt it needs to be tapped. But then again i never did a LS/VTEC.

This was taken from RobearRacing's FS post for the GE LS/VTEC kit...
"The kit includes:
- 1. Golden Eagle Vtec Conversion Sandwich Plate with a -6AN fitting for the plate and head.
- 2. -6AN steel braided teflon hose for oil supply
- 3. Golden Eagle Vtec Conversion Dowels for proper alignment of the head and block without machining
- 4. 1/8 NPT tap and plug for the oil port in the head
- 5. Golden Eagle worked factory head gasket with any bore size and dowel holes opened for any application
-When we say " NO Machining " we mean that there is no reason that anyone cannot do this kit in their own garage. - The only thing that must be done is tapping the head for the plug

Yeah I was just showing it to Luserkid to prove that the head does need to be tapped.
So how hard is it really to tap the head and what is needed?

Tapping is cake. It's just like a screwdriver that goes down into the hole.

just make sure you use some oil on the tap and be sure to keep the tap going straight into the hole. and since it is a pipe thread, the thread pitch diameter will get large the deeper you tap it. (the tap is tapered). make sure you only go as deep as the directions specify or you will be fucked! and since you're tapping aluminum, it is easy to cross thread it so just take your time and pay attention.
also, if it feels like it is getting hard to turn the tap, DONT FORCE IT! back the tap out a couple turns and it will break the chip that is binding it.
