Default Repair Update

Ok well I talked to the guy at the dealership yesterday. Apparently it wasn't the timing belt that snapped. It was a bolt on the timing belt cover that came loose somehow, dropped down into the engine and eventually got caught in the belt causing it to snap.

My pistons are ok. Valves are def being replaced. I should have the car back and on the road by early next week.

My question.... dealership did a valve adjustment about a month ago. Would they have taken the timing belt cover off to do that?

Either way, I hope it is not goin to cost as much as I originally posted because the pistons are ok. But hey I am gonna have 4 new valves.

Usually only the valve cover is removed for a valve adjustment. Even if it did "fall" out, my question would be, how did the bolt get from the outside to the inside. Cover bolts are outside the motor. Sounds to me like the tech dropped it down der.

i agree, seems fishy. there are bolts that can come loose inside the timing cover but they are not likely to come loose unless they have not been tighted after a repair, like cam seal replacement where you have to remove the bolts for the back cover, or water pump replacement where the water pump bolts need to be removed. but outer timing cover bolt going inside doesn't sound realistic

I've gotta say no way the bolt from the outside of the timing cover came loose and got in there. There is only one bolt INSIDE the cover that could come loose and its on the back cover up on the head. There would be no reason to remove or loosen it durring the valve adjustment.

Thanks for your help guys. As for the bolt. He didn't specify whether or not it was the outer or inner bolt.

I am assuming I am wrong and it was the ONLY bolt inside the cover. I still question how the hell the thing came loose and caused me worlds of problems. I am glad my pistons are ok.

Yea that sucks, I was hoping I would be able to find a cause for my problem at dealership fault. But I guess there is no way. I suppose whoever installed the PE belt didn't tighten things enough.
