Default IAB's open or closed?? w/pic

im assuming theyre open right now... but its like that all the time. i dont know why or how theyre affecting the afr, but i went to get tuned today... and it would go lean(about 15) right aroudn vtec... and then dip down very rich. it would slowly start to lean out, and be back around mid 13 by redline.

i was told i need a new iab vacuum canister, which im sure is right since i took the hose off the diaphragm, and i didnt feel any vacuum. but how could that not working cause the air/fuel to be so wacked out???

they are open when the car is off. when you start the car you should see it move and shut them.

its just like that in the pic, whether the car is on or off. in that pic, are the iab's open or closed? btw, i can turn that rotor clockwise, but ive never seen the inside of the manifold, so i dont know if its open or not in that pic.

i was thinking if im running with them closed, that could be causing the richness on the dyno... since im not getting the airflow i should. but wtf do i know.

is it something else causing my messed up air/fuel? cause it dips very rich for no apparent reason.

uhh..that's what all h22a's do....lean at crossover...then really rich...then leans out a little...

IABs are open after 4600 anyway...so what could it possibly have to do with fuel issues after VTEC crossover?

It can't.

i didnt think about it when i was told that, but thats what i figured. it shouldnt affect anything accept maybe a loss of some lowend torque. btw, i dont have a stock p13... i running a chipped p72. but when i mean rich after vtec, it dips off the map, below 9

here is a rough sketch of the graph as i remember it, i dont have the files on disk so i cant bring them up. but this is basically what it looked like.

its to the point, where if im running it hard through 3rd, when i shift to 4th and it drops in around 6k, black smoke shoots out the back.

What is this 'chip'. I would say that is your entire problem. However it is wirth noting that P72 IABs open at 5800....so if indeed it had been working you would have had additional problems on top of this.

Dyno a real P13 and see what happens..probably normal results...the chip is likely bunk.

the chip i have in there now is a custom mapped chip i had made over a year ago when i got the swap done. and if was fine back then. made 195/150. the problem now occurs when they take my ecu out and plug in the romulator to retune my car. thats when it starts acting up. i dont see how the iab's could be causing it... but somethings going on. i still made 191/150. so its not like my car is running like ****, its just bugging me that its not running better.

side note: since i dynoed a year ago, ive had my distributor replaced and the smog guys fucked with my timing, so i could pass smog... and i now have a 2.5" headerback, so i figured i would just retune for the hell of it.

im just worried about leaning out. is there anything bad that can happend from having too much fuel? im not worried about my cat, cause i dont have one, but will it cause excessive carbon buildup inside or anything like that?
