Default I think I've got fried piston rings, what do I do? (5th gen)

My cars been buring alot of oil. It drives slow as ****. I've got black soot coming out of my tail pipe. And I see little peices of metal in the old oil when I change my oil. And my cars runs slighlty faster when I add more oil. I'm 95% sure it's my piston rings.

At this point I know my engines not gonna last to much longer and I need to do something. Whats the best way to go?

Also, I'm not to confindent in the life left in my tranny so I'm thinking maybe go for a used front clip. What do you think?

Default Let me know what you do - I'm in the same boat

Mine is a 98 with 95,000 miles, never raced, never over-reved, never hit the rev limiter. I'm burning about 1 quart/1,000 miles and more if I get into vtec at all. Black soot on the bumper and in the air behind me.

I was checking out long blocks and found some decent prices, but I've got to find someone to put it all together for me.

peices of metal....wow your **** is toast man....

you could go for a whole front clip and get a jdm motor.....

or you could just get this one redone......025 over, the oem B pistons(or A whichever is bigger) and new rings.....the only thing that scetches me out is that you have metal shavings in the oil, that could get into the head and all the oil passages and not be good....

youre probably better off with a new(used) motor....

if u really want to find out if ur piston rings are dead do a compression test...if the readings come out low for all or a few or one of the cylinders squirt some oil in the cylinder let it soak then do another compression test if the compression increases then u got urself some dead piston rings. what the oil does is soak them and form a seal inbetween the piston and the cyl wall and improves the compression! good luck

Ive got an extra set of piston rings for 4 cyl's.... if you need them let me know

do a compression test and see where the air is coming out, that would answer a lot of your questions.

if it is your piston rings, you can take out the pistons and hone the cyl walls. if you have size B pistons then you can hone and get size A pistons with new rings.

if you have size A pistons...and your cyl wall is not damaged, you can just do minimal honing and get new rings and keep the size A pistons.

Otherwise hone it more and get the OS pistons.

I think I'm going to see if the engine I have now will last through winter, then probally get a used front clip come spring.
I know a guy that lives by me who can get used front clips for $2000-2200 with lower miles.
Right now that sounds like my best option.
