Default ATTN: NJ ITR owners (insurance topic)

Liberty Mutual initially quoted me at $2400 before I bought the ITR. Several months later they raise my premium to $4100 because they said the ITR was a performance model. They cannot tell me why they did not tell me that initially before I decided to buy the ITR. I dropped them and began to shop for another insurance company.

I was quoted by Greater American at $2100. I told them that this was a Type R and confirmed this bit of information with them several times. They even asked for the VIN because they claimed that they can find out all the information they need about the car from this. Two months later they lowball me by increasing my rates to $4600. They claim that they misquoted me and that the true premium is $4600. I honestly feel that they did this on purpose. They initially give me a low quote then raise it later. Then they can place the fault on their inability to properly quote.

Right now I am 22 years old with NO points. I am a full time student and would qualify for "good student" discount. $4600 is for full coverage and $1000 deductible(unless they changed it, but that's how it was set up when they intially quoted me at $2100.)

My question is how are other fellow New Jersey ITR owners insuring their cars. I currently cannot insure under my parents as I am the owner of the car and my parents do not wish to buy it from me. Even if I could lower my insurance drastically, I am more than likely going to sell the car regardless. I honestly do not think it is worth the high insurance and high theft anymore. I can only drive it to and from my work (park right in front of job). I cannot go to the mall, movies, school, etc. with it. Its become too much of a hassle. I even catch myself double checking people behind me who may be following me home.

well, before I moved to FL, I lived in NJ and also got a quote from Liberty Mutual for $2400 (I was 22 and had 1 ticket)...I didn't go w/ it only because that was around the time I decided to move to FL...

Did you try NJ Cure insurance? When I left, they were supposed to be one of the cheapest around...

Yes, I called them before as well during my 2nd search (between LM and GA). NJ Cure quoted me at $3800 with "good student" and $1000 deductible. I am told that NJ recently allowed an incease in premiums. I am not sure how much of an effect this has had, but its ridiculous for me to pay more in insuance than I pay to finance the car

Also I was told that Integra's had an recently received an increase in rates due to high risk theft. I am not sure how true this is either.

I hear ya on that...I had my car in my mom's name in NJ for the insurance reasons and I used a smaller company, the big companies wanted too much money

I actually heard this too and went to renew my coverage 2 months ago and didn't have an increase here...I was expecting one...well, at least I turn 25 in a few months and my premium will drop

Go to Palisides Insurance... email me of you need a phone number of a rep.
They claim to have the lowest insurace rates.

I dunno how about ITR, but I pay $1800 for a '01 BMW 330i and $800 for a '99 CRV per year.
I'm 24, singe, no points.

Kamil - I sent you email regarding Palisades Insurance. Although I am reluctant to insure the car, and would rather sell it. There were 6 ITR thefts posted on this board last week, and 3 or 4 of them were in the NY/NJ area

Anybody else? I know there are a few other New Jersey ITR owners on this board.

I paid my 6 month insurance bill last Friday. Allstate charged me $631.60 for full coverage on my 2000 R ($1000/$250 deductable) and liability only on my 89 Delta-88 (I'm 44 though). They did not increase my rate from my last bill.

I thought what happened to me was an isolated incident. I was dropping off my wife to work in Palo Alto and coincidentally, a PY ITR was in front of me turned right, then left, then right again and this happens to be the way to my wife's office.
He stopped his car in the middle of the road, got out and asked me "what's up" are you following me?" I was like you ******* moron......

A lot of us ITR owners have become very paranoid with the increased theft that has occured. Please forgive our paranoia

A few nights ago I thought somebody was following me home. I was about to do some evasive maneuvers, until the last moment where I made a turn and they continued straight. I know I'm not the only one of this board to do so

in jersey, it's not evey about following you hoime anymore.

all they do these days is write your plate numbers and one day when you wake up you'll have no car. it's scary but that's what's going on now.

no itr in the tri-state area is safe.

but seriously $4000+ for a $25,000 car in insurance per year is sick. not worth it even for an itr.

Yeah I understand. I am sure that person was just extra paranoid. I understand if I was driving some riced out Civic and tailing him but I was in an SUV. I just can't imagine his life is like. His eyes are probably in his rear view mirror more often than the road ahead of him.

I'm paying $2450 fully covered with $1000 deductibles and put a beater car on liability only at $550.. Previously before Jan 3, 2002, I was paying $3284 just for the R with $500 deductibles. I'm 27 now.

The multi-car discount was a humungus saving!. I have 5 insurance points, so once they drop. I should be down to $2400 with both cars. I just have to be good till May 2003....

arren123 - Who are you insured by? I also contemplated picking up a beater car to lower insurance with multi-car discounts, but I have no money to do so. Of course you are lucky to be 27 years old. I am 22 and would not move up to a different class until I am 25. BTW, is your insurance $2450 PLUS $550 (liability on beater)? Or is is $2450 with the $550 already included?

Its $2450 + $500 = $3000 per year w/Liberty Mutual
on 1/10/02, it'll probably go back up to $3250 because of the damn insurance rate hikes..

The new rate on 1/10/02 with just the ITR would have been $3598 The beater car in my case was a good move, but of course it cost me $3000 to get it.

But the peace of mind parking the beater in a parking lot instead of the ITR is well worth it.

Insurance on my '01 ITR is under my mom's name. 45 years old, married, 1 moving violation, 2 points, in NJ. $1098 for 6 months, $500 deductible per accident, full coverage. We do have the multi-car discount, along with all the anti-theft discounts. Not sure about the insurance price hike, but this is for our 1/11/02 to 7/11/02 bill. Our insurance company is Allstate. I hear that they're very selective with who they insure though.

It seems all you NJ ITR owners have insurance worked out. You either:
- own a beater car (multi-car discount)
- have it insured under your parents
- 25+ years older
- moved to another state

If you location is true, then you my friend are lucky not to live in NJ. This state generally has a higher premium compared to another state with the same general criteria. Just for the fun of it, I quoted myself on an online insurance website for California and came out to $1800/year. Of course that insurance agency does not offer insurance in NJ. According to a lot of reports on auto insurance operations in NJ, insurance companies are making claims to barely making a profit or operating in the red. You also do not fall under the single male category. Being married makes you a safer driver in the eyes of insurance companies.

I once called Allstate when they had sent me a post card that stated that if I am insured by Liberty Mutual, they could probably save me up to 15%. I called and the rep told me they were looking for people who had insurance for 10+ years and were 30+ years of age.

Thank you NJ

Out of curiosity, how much is the premium on your IS300? It is one of the cars I am considering when I graduate in 2 years.

You're right about the differnet state thing. I think NJ has one of the highest, if not THE highest insurance rates in the US.

I know that being 25+ years old does reduce insurance premiums, as well as being married, and having a kid.

NJ sucks

I bought my K1 racing rims from a guy in NJ who owned an ITR. The K1 rims were all that was left after his ITR was stolen from a parking spot right in front of his work entrance and stripped.

He had even done the ITR to GSR conversion in an effort to mask his car. No luck.

NJ sucks. I know, I grew up there and fled.

Ahh. just got my new policy starting 1/10/02. My estimate was damn close. Its going to cost me $3282 for the year. A whopping $2 less than I paid last year

Isn't state farm leaving NJ? Where will you go afterwards?

pcorad - I'm with you. After I finish college, I'm leaving this state. Who wants to pay more in insurance than the amount paid in finance in one year. If I paid insurance for 5 years, I can have another 25K car. Thank you NJ

Same happened to me! I also have liberty mutal and hiked up the cost on the ITR.
I'm currently shopping around and so far All State sounds promising.
I've got 4 pts, married, 28, 3 cars and they quoted me 3100 per year.

The Liberty Mutual was charging me 3300 for the year for the list above, then they hiked it to 5300 for the year.
