Default D16Z6 intake manifold VS D16Y8 Intake Manifold

All motor application , CRX SI motor with ZC PISTONS. about 11:1 compression. What are the advantages an disadvantages of one vs the other. I tried searching and couldnt find a definite answer. Is there really that big of a difference between the Z6 and Y8? thanks in advance

take a look here

http://www.hadamotorsport.com/...x.htm

but note that manifolds were dynoed at different times, not back to back.

i thought that there was a nice thread about the differences including plenum volumes and runner volumes on sohchonda.com or here but i cant find it right now...if i find it ill post it up.

found it...http://sohchonda.com/ipw-web/b...=4314

for those without an account...

I re-did this topic in part to see if some sprited conversation might occur in looking at this data

With 4dr talking about OE IM's and the inevitable Newbie questions about the Z6 vs Y8 IM ... I decided to bring this old post back to life. But to spice things up I added the measured length of the runners ... I measured as acurately as I could BUT when dealing with a cast 3D object it is difficult to get really accurate reading without cutting the IM apart... so you are stuck with what I could get.

I have posted Pictures below of both manifolds at various angles for your enjoyment

We know the Y8 Intake Manifold is bigger than the Z6 Intake manifold, but by how much ...nobody really knows so I figured we would measure what the internal volumes are.

Using a VERY scientific and accurate measuring technique ... NOT !!!! ... we measured the runner volumes and plenum volumes of both the Y8 and Z6 by sealing the various openings with duct tape, and filling the runners and the plenum with water and then measuring (using a standard kitchen measuring cup) the amount of water first in the entire IM and then just the runners, thus by simple subtraction we can also deduce the Plenum volume

This is what we found. Keep in mind that the numbers are not particularly accurate, but they are interesting, nonetheless.

Z6
Total IM Volume 1900cc
Plenum Volume 800cc
Runner Volume 275cc
Runner length 12"

Y8
Total IM Volume 2450cc
Plenum Volume 1450cc
Cyl 1 and 4 Volume (longest runners) 275cc
Cyl 2 & 3 Volume (shortest runners) 240cc
Runner length 12"

So ...
-The Y8 is 25% larger overall,
-The Y8 has 45% more plenum volume,
-The Y8 has mis-matched runner volumes with the inner runners having 15% less volume than the outer runners,
-The Y8 Outer runners are the same volume as the Z6.
-The z6 and Y8 Have approximatey the same runner length ... so the volume differences in the inner and out Y8 runners are probably in a diffference in cross section of the runner size at the plenum

What this all means in power gains is a bit of a guessing game, but some prior dynopulls I did show a loss in power below 4000 rpm bump in the power between 4500 and 5500 rpm and a general increase in power from about 6000 to fuel cut which I atribute to the Y8 IM.

The Pictures ... Y8 vs the Z6 IM

Cheers

Moose

Wow good info... I was always pretty sure the y8 mani was better but heard some people saying they still thought z6 was better, now there's definite conclusion.

So would the y8 be better for turbo and the z6 better for N/A.??

What is it that people say?? Newer is always better?

(well in this case)

Glad we put this to rest already.

Hmm.....now I am going to have to rebuild the A6 to Dyno the Z6 manifold on there. With the Y8 manifold I pulled 113.4/113.2, it should be interesting to see what the other pulls.
