car: 1999 Civic CX Hatch w/ rear drums

whenever im in reverse backing up my car makes a metal screeching sound. Almost like the rear brakes are dragging or something. I noticed that it does it the worst in the mornings when i first drive my car. Its not as noticeable onece the car has been driven a little but, its still there. The sound is definatly coming from the rear of the car.

Any ideas??

agreed, when brakes get worn they have a coating on them that makes them screech so you know when to replace them, but if it sounds like it is grinding, well do you have cross drilled or sloted rotors? i ask this because the wear pattern on the pad will be different than with a blank rotor, and when they are used mostly in a certain direction for a long period and become worn in a certain pattern when you reverse it it has more resistance and sounds like it grinds. Thats what i think

its not a coating
its a metal tab that is attached to the backing part of the pad.



this may not be it, but they usually are identical to this on MOST pads. some cars use a different type.

i have rear drums, so there is no brake pad, just brake shoes. i know about the metal tab on the disc brakes but, I dont think drums have a warning indicator like this do they??

i'll take em apart and check them sometime next week when i have time. I was just wondering if anyone knew what this might be off the top of there head. Its kinda weird that it only happens in reverse.

 

No drums (shoes) don't have an indicator tab...

It's probobly either some crap caught up inside your drums... or the shoes are worn down to the rivets...

I'm pretty sure our drums are not the kind that self adjust when you reverse... I'm 99% that they're manual adjust...

I'd just open up the drum and have a look see... it's probobly just some crap in there. that or caught up in the wheel etc.
