I just made a 500 mile road trip for the holidays and the HB did better than it ever had before. Exept for the fact that the tranny decided that it didn't like 5th gear. Twice.
91 HB DX with 125,xxx miles, manual. I'm cruising around 75 mph and out of nowhere the gearshift literally pops out of 5th and into neutral and my rpms skyrocket because of my foot on the gas. Not to mention that when this happens it scares the living **** out of me for a second. I just push the clutch in and put it back in 5th and all is well for the next 150 miles.
Same happens about 200 miles later. I just put it back in 5th and all is well. It just started doing this and I have no idea what is causing it.
Anybody encounter this before or know what's going on?

yup my buddies teg did this all the time. first gear was a pain in the *** to get into and 5th would pop out. Syncros are jacked. He did add LUCAS to it and it worked for the 5th gear prob but the 1st gear didnt help much it was to messed up..

The rest of the gears are no problem, no slipping or grinding. I've heard good stuff about Syncromesh so I think I'll try that.
Thanks for the replies guys.

Care to explain?
My tranny sounds fine, it doesn't grind or make any wierd noise for that matter. Shifts into all gears with ease, I kinda doubt it's gonna blow.

lol, ya know, I changed my axles last month and I think a little tranny fluid came out. Just been too lazy to do a complete change.
I thought that might have been the problem, but I couldn't figure out how.

had this happen on my old car... axle seal was bad, resulting in low trans fluid...
just refill and it should go away...
everyone was tellin me that same thing about the synchros being busted... turns out that adding some trans fluid helped the car stay in 5th

Its not the synchro thats bad. Its the snap ring. This is what provides the "click" when you go in gear, and keeps the fork where its supposed to be. This is usually caused by low fluid levels. My 5th gear snap ring actually broke and locked my tranny up....
BTW, 1.9 quarts of oil is all the tranny is supposed to take. I wouldn't put any more in there. I don't know much about different brands of fluid to help, but if putting the right amount of oil (10W-30) doesn't help, ask around
