Default 87 CRX Si not starting, backfiring

My buddy has an 87 CRX Si that I'm hoping I'm gonna end up with (he now wants to buy a Civic hatch off the same guy heh) in fairly good condition except that it won't start. It cranks over but won't start, and backfires while cranking.

My other buddy (the guy who sold the car originally) said he checked compression, spark, and timing. Is there anything else it could be, maybe something fuel related? I'm gonna check the timing again just to make sure its right, but barring that, does anyone have any other suggestions to what it might be?

closest thing i could find you...might work on an 87 but it isnt garanteed mate.

EDIT

bit more expensive but it doesnt specify year...might work on 87's as well.

Make sure the plugs are good and the wires are hooked up correctly.

That too, but he cant check timing if the car wont start. But yea its most likely ignition related.

He can pull the valve cover, turn the crankpulley and make sure all the marks on the pulleys are lined up.

Check the distributor rotor screw. Happened to a friends GSR...and it did the same thing, cranked over and backfired while doing so.

check the fuel filters as well, my 85 Si is a bitch sometimes because of the fuel filter.
