half inch is almost enough to break a rim... are you sure?

dude, ONE inch is 2.54 cm.... check yer math.
but i'll try to help-
if it is as deep as you say, and sanding/grinding it out before repolishing won't work, you will need to add material to the wheel. then you'll grind down the added stuff to make it flush and re-polish or paint.
there are some diy fixes- alumaloy, variuos epoxies if you are going to paint over it, etc., but if you are having this much trouble thinking about how deep the scratch even is, then i'd leave it to someone else. many places advertise in the back of magazines, and your local car dealer (any dealer should know, but expensive places with customers that have more money than brains definately will)can reccommend a local place. the "one rate" guys are usually $100, so i'd try to find a shop that will charge based on the job since yers doesn't sound like a big deal.

Those have a machined face - correct? You'll have to get that one over to a wheel refinisher. Otherwise you'll have to get access to a large lathe to re-machine the face.
Using progressively finer grits of sandpaper with autosol works if the face of the rim is smooth.
