RPM stuck at 8K! Clutch related?

RPM stuck at 8K! Clutch related?
My friend took his Turbo SI to this placed called "MEtro" in maryland and raced his car and lost to a CRX and Eclipse! Total embarrasement. BUT...his lost had to deal with his clutch or something.
He was in 1st and shifted to 2nd at 8K RPM and his RPM was stuck at 8K and would not go up? STrange. He has a STOCK clutch btw. He has a clutchmasters stage 3 laying around but can't install it until spring.
Is this clutch related?
