1999 accord problems
hey guys new to the site(officially), but have been a lurker for some time. let me say your advice is top-notch. So hopefully someone can help me. I have a 99 accord 4cyl. 2.3L-w/ 136,000 miles. As of recent the car cuts off on me, usually at red lights, but also when I'm driving on the highway. by "cut-off" i mean the RPM's (at red lights) will got from around 900(where it usually is at idle) to 700 to 400 to zero. between the 700 and 400 the car will shake as if it has little to no gas. when the car "cuts-off" I will let it sit for literally 30 seconds, crank it up and it starts fine and gets me the rest of the way to my destination with no problems. It does this once every trip. My "check engine" light is on and has been for 5 months, when I took it to Auto zone(5 months ago) they said it was a bad o2 sensor. (i know 5 months is too long to go on with a check engine light on but I am a broke college student. I took it to Honda and they said it wasnot an O2 sensor, but a malfunctioning computer and bad cat converter-est cost-$1200. I ask some friends who have a hair more automotive knowledge the myself and they said it was a bad or clogged fuel filter.......can anyone help or is this the end of my "reliable" college car......any info will be great...Thanx and Happy holidays
main relay----how much $ to fix it say from the dealer or firestone??----ohh yeah thanx for the help
ps... is it something a novice like myself can fix???

I have a 1998 Accord v6 and at about 25mph it starts as though it is going to shut off and it jerks into turbo what causes this. Also the check engine light was on for the past 4 days does this have anything to do with that. Can someone help?

If you want to check your ignition, go to the dealer. Some 6th gens have faulty ignitions, and you might be able to say 'the key came out while the car was in drive' and theyll replace it for free...
Oh yeah I forgot I can edit my own title! Yay!

I am having this problem as well only the shaking and cutting out occurs on cold starts. The engine doesn't totally cut out but it becomes a rough idle and the RPM drop to about 300. If I warm up the car it's okay. It's just weird because I have a '99 and live in CA. It's not exactly freezing cold around here.

sounds like the tranny is on the way out, most likly it slipt a gear and it caused it to pull you ahead so hard..."the turbo felling" i know how it fells

I disagree. He says it acts like it's going to shut off, suggesting stumbling or something of the sort. A slipping tranny would cause the opposite... When the tranny attempts to shift gears, the rpms shoot up before finally slamming into the next gear, thus jerking the car forward.
I say, check the CEL code, as it might very well have something to do with the problem.
As for the original poster, I would recheck the codes before attempting any repairs... just to make sure.

I wish I checked up on that recall thing. I have a 98' (6th gen) and it was having problems turning on unless I turned the key and held it just right. Also if I touched it, it would shut the car off while I was driving on the highway or anywhere. I handled it well since I drive a manual and can just hold the clutch down and coast until the car ignites up again. The time it would get scary was when it did it during a turn. Without power steering it was impossible to turn and the steering wheel would lock up. Sigh. Cost me about $1000 to have the ignition switch and the o2 sensor done. Greatttt...
We got the code it read P0740 tcc circuit malfunction> Everyone tells us that we're better off replacing the transmission. Does anyone have any suggestions or where we could get one at a good cost.
for the poster:
I had a problem with my ignition switch; the engine will completely shut off (no hesitation, no slow drop in rpm). For Accords year '98-99, there is an ignition switch recall. Just can any Honda dealer and give them your VIN number and they'll get it done for you. There is also an idle screw recall.
Most of the 6th gen Accords get the cat. converter check engine code. Most of the time, resetting it will get it to go away, but it comes back intermittenly. Under the hood, open the fuse box and pull the "back up" fuse ( it's a 30 or 40A one) out and then put it back after 30 seconds. It should reset your check engine light, also your clock.
