How screwed am I?
I bought a 4th gen Si transmission from a shop in Miami. Which will remain nameless. I put my D16Z6 in today, bolted the tranny onto the block and get all the mounts on. Wohoo... successful day; almost. I decided then to drain the tranny. What do you know? ENGINE oil came out! The oil looked pretty clean, which would mean its pretty recent, but I can't be sure as to how recent. What should I do? Get a different tranny from the shop or try out the transmission I have and see how that goes? Dilemas suck!
I am DEFINATELY calling him tomorrow and tell him what happened, if he doesn't pick up, then on monday (27th) call and tell him what happened. That guy better get me a new tranny if this one gets screwed up for no charge. If he doesn't... and you see a shop bombing on the news, It was NOT me.
Just Kidding.

wait wait wait... hahaha, dont' jump the gun here...
most MT honda trannys call for a 40 wg. motor oil.
yes.. i said it. 40 weight oil.
you can use multigrades in some different weather conditions, but for the most part a 40 wg would be fine. also, you could use honda's special MT fluid, or an syntetic blend, like GM syncromesh.
if i were you, ide fill it right back up with 40 wg. and give it a spin. thats the only way your going to know the condition of the tranny.

just curious.. what were you expecting to come out? something red? those are for auto's... MT's dont' normally use RED fluid.
Just like other said, Honda tranny fluid is 40 wt. If I were you I would get 1 qt of synchromesh and 1 qt of friction modified synchromesh. Put it in and drive around to see how it works.
did you buy it from honda specialists? i bought a tranny from them and it is perfect they are awesome. and its true what everyone is saying motor oil is common to put in MTs. so your not screwed at all only because there was oil in it.

It IS a manual! 5 spd. No, it was not red. What I was expecting to come out was a liquid, the same color, clearish brown, but smelling like the red tranny fluid, not engine oil. Also having about a 90wt.
Thank god, no metal shavings! I also bought some gear oil, so that will be going in.

Dude, engine oil is what you're supposed to use!!!!
You can use either Honda MTF (basically motor oil with some additives) or some GM Synchromesh fluid, or even just any 5w30 motor oil.

Yeah dude, motor oil is commonly used in our trannys. Actually the Honda dealership I buy my MTF from, the parts guy told me they use motor oil not MTF. He said he didn't know what MTF was for. I always use Honda MTF myself though, many others I know of just use motor oil though.
motor oil-yes, just DO NOTTTTTTT USE SYNTHETIC!!!!!!! i did and it made everything worse, ps i wasn't beating on my tranny either. i knew it was on its last leg so i drove sanely on it, changed the oil in there to synthetic and all **** broke loose. i got a new trans now too, hope it's in much better shape!
I've heard the best things about GM Syncromesh, my Manual Transmissions teacher swears by the stuff, but he's only a teacher who was a trans tech for like 40 years. synchromesh in mine, i'll tell ya that!
i didn't say "don't use GM syncromesh"
i def. noticed a big difference when i used regular synthetic motor oil in my trans however and the difference was 2nd (always) and 3rd sometimes grinding
later on i read somewhere that its not reccomended.

Alright, I guess I'm not going to put in the 80-W90 (i think) gear oil I have. I'll either put in 10-W30 or the GM Synchromesh stuff. Thanks to everyone.
