yep its pretty much the only thing that could cause this, its the sole job of the thermostat basically to let the car not get too cold so it shuts down until a hot temperature where it cools again but if that sucker is stuck open which can definitely happen then your in cool mode all the time, and that sucks because your car wont operate at the proper temperature and you blow cold air

has to be at proper operating temp for VTEC to engage...replace that thermostat and problem should be solved.

thats the same thing that is happening to my car as we speak well not really but when i drive it, it never warms up so i am going to change my thermostate this week , in my old setup ls/vtec turbo i had the exact same thermostate in it, and on the dyno on a 86 degree day it only ran 130 degrees at wot and 140 degrees when at idle so it has been stuck open for a while now, but then atleast i didn't have to worry about it overheating

not the thermostat........

With the heat going full blast, you are bypassing the thermostat......when sends the coolant after you've heated your tootsies, back to a cold radiator.

Simple cure, block off 2/3's of the radiator.

may i ask how the valve being fully open bypasses the thermostat?

the heater core get's it water source BEFORE the thermostat, then returns it after the thermostat.

So simply, your heater slide control on the dash is a second thermostat.

This is good info to know if your thermostat sticks shut. Throw on the heat full blast and keep driving.

I use these to know what my engine is doing...............

You might wanna know that the stock needle is at 3/8 mark at 125F and at 1/2 mark at 155-210 degrees. Once it goes beyond 1/2 way, you have issues.

--runs outside and checks coolant hoses--- ohh dohhh.
for some odd reason i didint think it was like that.
but do you think that amount of coolant that does actually circulate is going to be able to cool the water at operating temperature?

ok think about it, the heater core gets its water directly off the head, so that means the incoming water is only as hot as the water going into the motor. And it circulates back into the water pipe on back or the neck on back.SO no it dosent bypass the thermostat it bypasses the engine block. So when the theromstat is stuck open the the water dosen't have time to heat up, thats what the thermostat is for to keep the water in the engine until a desired temp. Then it opens and circulates threw the rediator. Now u have to think about what your saying about the heater core bypassing the thermostat.Thats just wrong the only reason the temp gauge could or would go down because the heater is on is because the heater core is acting like the radiator, its cooling the fluid down.So when your thermostat is stuck open there is two thing cooling the water doen the radiator and the heater core fan(only if the heater is on.Plus why would they make a heater that wouldn't work right in 45 degree or below weather.Go and look at the cooling sytem in a honda. Its supplies the heater core from the head, and returns from it back into the water pipe on the back or the water neck BEFORE the thermostat. So there is no way it bypasses the thermostat because it runs right back into it.So man by a new thermostat, and at 15 degrees i promise u it will be a running temp and have a good heater. Also you have the same problem i had and i bought a new thermostat and guess what its fixed.
