JDM Kaiten Super Karaui 8.8lb Flywheel....Good? Might plan on buying

 

sounds expensive. ACT prolite(about 8.8lbs i think) has my vote though.

 

I have used both ACT and Fidanza... now using the Exedy w/ Exedy clutch and will be from now on.

 

Fidanza 7.5lb owns me!!!

 

i got the clutch masters in on my b18c the 8lb (actually weighs 7.8 on digi scale)

i.m.o had exceptional machine work and is completely rebuildable, including the ring gear.

i don't know if that is the case for the others cause i didnt look at any other flywheel, the shop i bought my act clutch kit at had it in stock, and i was out in the shop weighing factory flywheels, trying to find one light than mine, and the shop owner came out and said why don't you just use the c/m in the case in there. i told him i didn't have any money after buying the clutch and he repeated himself. so i took it and have been loving it ever since

 

ACT prolite get a big and have one in the hatch but I need another one for the EG8 so I looking for another one also.

Buy it, install it and tell us your experience!!! What clutch do you plan on using with it ?

 

I like stock, and if i feel like lighting it up ill take it to a machine shop and have it lowered.

 

does anyone know about how much WHP you get going from a stock FW to a ~8lb on a b18c? any dyno charts?

first off you don't gain much (if any) whp from a clutch & flywheel

they will enable your car to accelerate (& decelerate) quicker since there is less rotational mass on the crank. this means when you press the clutch in to shift your revs will fall faster too

BTW look into aluminum vs. chromemoly flywheels...chromemoly is stronger. I have seen in some boosted apps teeth ripping off of aluminum flywheels

I went with toda (k20a) flywheel for my new set up...its the lightest chromemoly available for K20a

How can the car accelerate quicker if there's no additional whp (or torque?). It wouldn't be able to. You should, in fact, be able to see a gain in WHP by reducing the rotational mass of the drivetrain.

Yea, and chromoly is brittle... I've run Clutchmaster and Fidanza for years because they have always been the best option for the money. I've never had a single problem with mine - despite some people claiming longevity issues with the aluminum. Now that ACT came out with their low-priced offerings there is finally another decent option. I'd buy either of these and stay away from just about everything else on the market - especially the overpriced JDM ish. I *have* bought toda before because it's extremely high quality, but I still think it's overpriced in comparison.

 

I just got a TODA flywheel installed in my DOHC. That badboy is SWEET!

 

Fidanza Used the same flywheel for 2years with out any problems

I said he wouldn't gain MUCH whp (if any)...yes the lighter flywheel should help decrease the drivetrain power loss (but not by much) the car will accelerate & decelerate more quickly. If you put an ITR tranny in a LS will it accelerate faster - yes - will it give it more whp - no I realize its a different senario but same concept that I was getting too. not like he is going to get 10+ whp from a flywheel

 

exedy 9.5 lbs. in b16 revs fast in 1st and 2nd......and thats it. still fun to drive though.

Anyone have any experience w/ the Comptech flywheel?

From everything that I've read, a the high quality steel in chromemoly flywheels will cause premature wear of the standard steel gear teeth in your starter.

An Aluminum flywheel shouldn't loose any gear teath because the ring gear on the outer edge is steel, not aluminum.

You can measure the difference on a dyno, but from what I heard, it also drops your tourque in some areas too. Whats the point of measuring since it really does nothing but help. One thing I always thought was stupid was when people throw out their harmonic damper (cutting down engine life) to lighten up the crank, when all you have to do is lighten the flywheel.

I was just about to suggest that too. Light, alum., and has a replaceable friction surface
