Threw a Code. Please Help CEL 90
Hello,
This CEL has been popping up on and off within the past 6 months after a few resets, and an engine swap. Today, it came back on.
The code is 90 (1456/1457). I know what it stands for, but I need to know what to do fix this problem. It could be as simple as a gas cap being defective, but I recently got a smog check, so it couldnt be. The MIL wasnt on during the smog btw.
P1457 (90) EVAP emission Control System Leak Detected (Fuel Tank System)
P1457 (90) EVAP Emission Control System Leak Detected (Control Canister System)
Can it be both, or can it only be one of the other?
-If its a Fuel Tank System Leak, wouldnt that be a gas cap issue? Im sure it may be something more than the obvious.
-If its a Contol Canister System leak, what could this be? Stuck purge solenoid? Leaky vaccum hoses on the canister?
Anyone have this problem and solved it?
Its a 2k Civic Ex.
Thanks

And believe me, Ive searched, and I search alot before I post.
I dont feel like taking a guess and purchase a HONDA CANISTER VENT SHUT VALVE(CVS). Even though this may be the problem, I want to make sure before I do. Is this also located on the canister itself, or is it somewhere mounted on thh firewall?

You're guess is really as good as ours on this code. You need a Helms, multi-meter and vacuum pump in order to troubleshoot correctly.
Basically OBD2 has to be able to detect a .040" pin-hole in the EVAP equipment and plumbing. It does this by closing a valve or two which isolates the EVAP system from the engine. It then looks at the fuel tank pressure sensor for a voltage change - if the pressure goes up, we can conclude that the EVAP lines are hole-free because if there was a hole, the pressure would escape through it.
This is 'basically' how it works which is why its hard to say "Your vent control valve is the cause" - it could be anything allowing pressure to escape: The canister itself, the lines, the valves, the gas tank possibly (doubt that one, but still).
You really need the Helms here - the troubleshooting procedure is many many pages long for these types of codes.
